Story
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

You always learn something worthwhile...
Reviewed: 02-20-25
You always learn something worthwhile from Malcolm Gladnwell. I think he's a great author, writer and thinker.
This time, I also learned, not surprisingly, that he's also what I would call "a little Left of Center" on social issue, like gun control, racial inequities, policing and crime. These exposures of his own feelings were very minor and didn't interfere in the least with the story he was telling or the conclusions he drew, but they were there and I did notice. They were no big deal.

No one expected Ragnarok. The miles-wide meteor fell from the sky in 2030, taking most of humanity with it. The lucky ones took refuge in the Bunkers. The unlucky ones had to deal with the meteor's aftermath...and the alien virus it unleashed. Now, that virus is evolving, creating an army of mutants and monsters, mixing Earth genetics with something...not Earth. As humanity struggles in the wastelands of what's left, it might already be too late...unless a band of young heroes can rise up, and fight.

Story
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Everything you didn't know you didn't know about Nuclear War
Reviewed: 07-04-24
After listening to nearly one thousand audiobooks, NUCLEAR WAR by Annie Jacobsen is easily the most important.
More important than Politics because your politics won't matter if the system of Mutually Assured Destruction Deterence (MADD) spins out of control.
More important than Finance because your financial circumstances won't matter once the World Economy collapses totally in the span of a single hour.
I beleive the topic of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation is second only (in importance) to the existence of God, whether the Bible is true and whether Jesus really is (or was) His Son.
If you have no books at all, get the Bible. If you already have a Bible, get this one next.

If you love God you probably won't like the very very end much where they fantasize about becoming Gods.
The funny part of this book is a formula that's supposed to increase intelligence. And yet it doesn't lead the protagonists to the simplest and most obvious conclusion regarding the creation of the Universe... that it was created by God.

This book is definitely worth it. Starting out slow and intellectually burdensome with enough obscure name dropping and vague references to make all but the most well read feel like moving on, The story finally starts to pick up speed in part II and moves on at an increasing pace thru the neatly wrapped up ending of proceedings.
I say this book is worth it because in the end the writer brings it all back to the most important aspects of life, love and loss, finally closing with a couple of profoundly simple but important truths worth hearing.
Translation: The ending is worth the time it takes to get there.

Story
Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washing D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver. Bug–a natural, charismatic leader–refuses to leave anyone behind while Books–a pragmatic social outsider–wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive. But DC isn't exactly the safe haven they hoped for.

Story
On his second combat tour, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. This unit was part of MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group), or Studies and Observations Group as it was innocuously called. The small recon companies that were the center of its activities conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the war, infiltrating areas controlled by the North Vietnamese in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The companies never exceeded more than 30 Americans, yet they were the best source for the enemy's disposition.

An Injection of Respect
Reviewed: 07-04-23
After listening to both volumes of this story, the feeling I'm left with is one of deep, deep respect for the Montagnards and the American soldiers who became their brothers in arms.
The books are not about them. They are just a part of it. A part I did not understand until I heard this story. A part I want to know more about.
That is what a successful book does. It plants a seed inside you. I'm going to water mine.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.
