A Meaningful Contribution to a Study Still in Its Infancy

I read this book because I’m interested in how people who’ve had near-death experiences (NDE) integrate their experiences into their everyday lives. For me, what’s most compelling about NDEs is how they change lives. Almost all books on this subject focus on the “specialness” of these experiences and, while this book does include many NDE accounts, I appreciated Bachrach’s coining the term ‘death journey” instead of using NDE, which broadens the meaning beyond the individuals who have had them. I also value how her views about this subject evolved over the course of her writing this book and how her own fears about death diminished as a result. The narrator’s intonations and pronunciations are a little off sometimes but, overall, she did her best to voice the author’s story and an enjoyable audio book.

An honest, heartfelt memoir about trying to live up to the expectations all marriages hold, and the inevitable disappointments that come when we, and the one we love, repeatedly fall short. Henderson bravely explores the choices she’s made as the wife of a gifted man whose prospects dim as he begins suffering physical and mental breakdowns, for which there’s limited help and many dissatisfying answers. Few stories examine the struggles women face who try to support husbands haunted by sexual trauma and a mysterious illness.

I thought Brooks’ voice was perfect for Anna’s character given that Anna must grow through, and with, so much grief and self-doubt. She conveyed a memorable presence, one I didn’t want to walk away from.

If you’re a student of Dr. Wapnick’s, you’ll appreciate having this compilation of his lectures to repeatedly listen to, especially in this order. Thank you to those who put this book together. It’s a great help.
