Kon-Tiki was one of my early paperback book purchases about 60 years ago and read it several times before high school graduation, so I am pleased to report that this audio version is simply delightful. Peter Kenny really conveyed me to the jungle adventure and the raft adventure across the Pacific Ocean. I hope that middle school and older readers will find Mr. Heyerdahl's book 1940's theory of ancient migrations entertaining for adventure, science, archaeology, geography, and more. I am pleased there has been an epilogue added for this version that includes more about the work regarding Easter Island. An excellent treasure!

This book has a good story about John Horse and the Seminoles that I had no information about. The length is about right for children. I wonder if young listeners might benefit with access to a pdf sketch of the forts and other locations since the story covers considerable territory over the North American continent. Thanks to the author for taking up the suggestion to write about this man and this group of people.

Germany Burned v. ASE Books for USA GIs

For a fictional novel, The Librarian of Burned Books tells the story of three women whose lives and understanding of the importance of books is strongly affected by the 1933 book burnings of banned books with the German students lighting the first flames. The librarians and citizens in the USA answered a call for donations but quickly found a need for the GIs sent overseas to have more portable reading material, so the ASE books were created. The ASEs were a hit but then Washington, D.C. got in on the action with censorship and election laws. I recommend a book, When Books Went to War, by Molly Guptil Manning for the research on archives for some of the authors like Betty Smith that were published in the ASEs, plenty of research on the ASE formats, and then all that messy censorship. Of course recommend the fiction book here for students. Everyone should remember that great libraries all over Europe were destroyed or dismantled for many reasons and there are good books about some of those efforts.

The podcast runs three short mysteries with new shop owner, Emily Lane, finding it difficult to stay out of new local crime investigations. She is new to town so everyone including the local police detective and his daughter are trying to get to know Emily. The author has a good idea for this short story style mystery. This is good for an afternoon or evening listen.

I very much appreciated these bite size segment of history with several episodes to give a good picture of the event(s) and include additional books for more information. Many of the segments of history include a concluding interview with someone who has spent considerable time researching, writing, or teaching on the topic that I found helpful. I have added a number of books to my reading collections based on some of the topics, or the segments were just good refreshers of old history classes, discussions with people over the years. I hope this podcast will be available somewhere in the future for others to find and listen. Thanks to all who put so much time and effort to do about 225 episodes.

Vets battle local elected tyrants

Chris Derose has written an excellent book telling the story of a local election in 1946 that returning WWII veterans decided to be candidates and then the supporters of the veterans seemed compelled to physically battle for the ballot boxes to force a fair count when there was no other political or legal authority to help. I encourage people to listen to or read this book and consider it for family discussions with students since the poll tax system and other segments of this story really could be good material. Excellent book!

The book reflects on events of the Trump campaign and many events that Sarah Huckabee Sanders was involved in while she worked to inform the public and assist the President. Her story includes items from her early years in Arkansas and the politics of the state and her father's own campaigns. I really am impressed more now than I had while she was in DC! Very good book!

The author includes many examples of cases of men who seem to have erased their wives or other women; however, the real focus of the book seems to be the Scott Peterson case. Frankly, while I was interested in the cases the book skips around so much that all I remember is the Scott Peterson saga but even that had its distractions.

Tyler Schultz certainly managed to find himself in quite the sticky situation with that nearly dream job/company fresh out of college and his famous grandfather was on the board of directors. The fraud involved with the data, statistics, and the testing with the equipment must have been seriously blatant to find problems so soon into the job and yet I am not terribly surprised that he had trouble finding anyone to take his concerns seriously. It is good that he struggled through a very scary and expensive time. Best wishes for this young man. This story might be helpful for many young students.
