Story
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Story
When an unknown someone shoots him and leaves him to die, Harry Dresden hopes he might be heading to a better place. Unfortunately being dead doesn't make Harry's life any easier. Trapped between life and death, he learns that his friends are in serious trouble. Only by finding his murderer can he save his friends and move on - a feat that would be a lot easier if he had a body and access to his powers. Worse still are the malevolent shadows that roam Chicago, controlled by a dark entity that wants Harry to suffer even in death.

Meh, weak compared to others
Reviewed: 10-25-22
This book was weak compared to others in the series. Butcher’s endless thirst continues (someone just bang that dude already). The plot has a lot of holes and the rambling digressions dilute the plot. The endless torture or Dresden and his friends is beyond tiresome. It was nice to see him diverge from the usual format though. Its just ok. The narration is superb as always.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

A Bit Tedious…
Reviewed: 09-16-22
The way the plot unfolds and the excessive internal monologue get tedious. The narration is a bit awkward, albeit enthusiastic. The one saving grace is the relationship between the two main characters. If you like math and hard scifi you may enjoy this more than I did. I wanted more plot and fewer equations.

Jim Butcher Badly Needs Some Lovin (Skip this one)
Reviewed: 03-23-22
This series was pretty good until book 6. Butcher's creepy horny old geek vibe really bursts to the surface in this book. The thirst is a bit much. Im not a sensitive person by any means, but every single female in the series is a goddess that Harry can hardly resist. I mean every single one. Plus, the dialog goes on for weeks. The narrator is excellent.

Keep on the Borderlands was one of the very first D&D adventures, so seasoned gamers remember this product from their early days, and newer gamers will recognize it from the 25th anniversary rerelease. Greyhawk novels are based on the classic D&D modules from this world and provide listeners with the same kind of feeling that they get playing classic D&D modules.

Meh… zero plot
Reviewed: 08-09-21
The narrator does an excellent job, but the story is just one random encounter after another. To be fair though, the Caves of Chaos adventure, Keep on the Borderlands, is just a string of random encounters with almost no plot. Worst in the Greyhawk series.

Trouble is, nobody has ever heard of the First People's Bank, and the local branch has appeared mysteriously overnight. Their incentives for new customers seem reasonable...at first. Too much of the same
Reviewed: 04-09-20
I love BL and own all of his books, but several are just retreads of older stories. How does this book differ from The Mailman? Or the Store? Or many others. They all follow the very same format and this one really had no plot, just a string of scenes to fill the page requirement. This book was a disappointment.
