I get the tough love thing…pull yourself up because no one’s going to save you, etc… which is why the book was recommended to me. Without any context as to the author or her religious, philosophical or cultural background I read the book on a friend’s recommendation.
The chapter of “servitude” (my words not the author’s) of a month-long no saying no to sex to strengthen her relationship with her husband left me feeling so very sad and angry and a mixture of other emotions. She writes it as a great triumph in their closeness, but I didn’t feel that way reading it.
It reminded me of my friend who had marriage counseling before her wedding in the Baptist church and she was told that she wasn’t allowed to “deny” her husband sex except when she was sick or on her period. If there is something broken in a marriage that makes women not want to engage in sexual intimacy or any form of intimacy with their husband, that’s typically because they don’t feel safe, loved, appreciated or, attracted to them anymore. It’s not a duty. Women’s autonomy comes before marriage partners.

I've found this book very helpful. I'm only beginning to implement the dare response. I appreciate the simple descriptions and thorough chapters which cover many aspects of anxiety, the symptoms and response.
