Story
A kid walks into your bookstore and says to you, Guess what? I'm your son. The one you put up for adoption seventeen years ago. The one you never told anyone about. Surprise! His name is Matthew Walker, and he's come to spend the summer on the Cape with his parents. Why? Well, he wants to meet you before he heads off to college in the fall. Tiny detail—he didn't tell his adoptive parents about his plan. And while you hoped this day would come someday, you're so stunned, you actually faint.

A touching story
Reviewed: 03-10-25
I loved the character development in this story. It’s also a realistic story about family, showing its warts as well as its love and beauty. I learned a lot about the struggles of some adopted children, their birth parents and adoptive families.

Good story, but the narrator!
Reviewed: 05-25-24
I love Anne Gracie books, The narrator COULD be good. She read with expression and with different voices for each person. The problem was she over-ennunciated every word. I heard every single letter of every word. it was very unnatural and distracting.

Legal thrillers are not my usual genre, but this one was great! I loved listening to the characters develop and evolve through the story. I lived through that era, and it was an important reminder of how hate-filled it was and how far we have come, though racism still rears it's ugly head. It also speaks to me about polarization we have in this country today and gives me a little hope. Aside from all that, the story line was intriguing all the way throughand the narration was excellent.

1914, Fiji: 25-year-old Akal Singh would rather be anywhere but this tropical paradise—or, as he calls it, “this godforsaken island.” After a promising start to his police career in his native India and Hong Kong, Akal has been sent to Fiji as punishment for a humiliating professional mistake. Lonely and grumpy, Akal plods through his work and dreams of getting back to Hong Kong. Not a stand-alone. No ending
Reviewed: 01-07-23
I generally like a good series. But not when the books are not stand-alone. This book just stops in the middle of nowhere. I would really like to know what happened in Gideon's past. But I'm not willing to spend another credit or three to find out. Series like these are just one long book broken up into pieces so you will spend more money. This story is not compelling enough for me to continue the series. I actually was becoming annoyed with Ava's behavior in this book. i really didn't like her. At first, I didn't like the narrator's voice, but after I got used to her I decided she was very good. She did an excellent job with different voices.

Not a book! An Intro
Reviewed: 09-20-22
I love real book series! But this is not. i hate when a book, which is supposed to be a whole story, is just divided into several parts, just to make you buy the next part or parts. Basically nothing happens in this book. it's just a set up for the story which you need to buy. but I won't because I won't waste credits on a 5 hr. book or 2 credits on 2 5 hour books that should sell be one book for 1 credit.
The narrators had good voices for there role. But nobody speaks that slowly and distinctly. The scripted conversation was natural enough. Just the speaking was not. it sounded like someone was telling a story to a child. I sense the narrators were probably competent. but since they all spoke that way, perhaps it was the way they were directed.
