2nd book is like the first
Reviewed: 05-02-25
I really liked the first book in this series. I thought the author very clever and original in her approach to the story. However I now realize the second is like the first. I wont read the others in the series because of this and Im trying hard to finish this one. I like surprises at the end, happy endings nice but not necessary. I like to be kept guessing at which way the author will go with the outcome and with these books there is no mystery or suspense. Very disappointing. It’s difficult not to just cast it aside, but I paid for it.

I couldn’t put this down. This is an important part of our history and should be in every school book pertaining to the history of our young country. I’m putting Mary on the top of my list of heroes. If I had to do what she did, I would’ve never made it. I agree with the comments on the narrator. His voice for Mary didn’t exactly do her justice. But if you can get past that, please read this.

Story
I was just eight-years-old when Asa Calhoun became my one true love. He was my brother's best friend. He was stoic and solemn, and always believed everything in life had to be perfect. But I saw past his eccentric mannerisms. I found him fascinating. I was 17 when I had my debutante ball. Throughout the years, there was a gradual shift between us. I stopped being the little sister he's always known me as and transformed into a lady. By the end of that night, he found me fascinating.

Old house, ghosts, a love story, a mystery, time travel. What more could you want? I did enjoy this book. The mystery had me guessing as I couldn’t figure it out until near the end. Some of it was a bit frivolous, like the lovemaking. It’s not nasty or icky. It’s just a little “ oh, come on, seriously?” lots of twist and turns I like that in characters as well as plot.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Her name is synonymous with the West. Her celebrity has spread to the East Coast and California, traveling down the newly laid railroads and along the telegraph wire. But breathless tales of Calamity Jane bear little resemblance to the truth. As she senses death coming closer, the legendary hellcat longs to set the record straight - to reveal her life story at last, unclouded by legend, every sin and failing laid bare. Only then can she hope to rest in peace. In a Deadwood saloon, she finds a writer willing to hear her out and recount the truth to the public....

Tragic

This book left me feeling a bit sad but only because our favorite heroine of the old west is revealed to be a broken and ruined alcoholic. The story is true though and I would rather my eyes be opened to truth over fairy tale. Some of our favorites are here; wild Bill Hitchcock and Buffalo Bill Cody. A perfect picture of the old west is woven through with both hardship and beauty along with the heartbreak of unrequited love. Experience the music and dancing of the smoke filled dance halls as well as Bill Cody’s glitzy city-fied “old west” arena. Traverse the wide open prairie with its star-filled nights and cold rushing rivers and the heart ache of starvation and disease of the railroad tent towns and one woman’s hope for belonging and love. This book is very well done and the word pictures are exquisite. Highly recommend.

Delightful!

I was skeptical at first as the book’s start was a bit banal. Then I started to be thwarted in my usual game of guessing as to what was going to happen next, being proven wrong again and yet again. WWI scenes were quite horrific, apropos to the reality of what was to become The Great War. I was fascinated with what passed for medicine at the time and the reality of camp surgery and nursing. The time travel aspect of the story took second place to the history of the era and the sweet wartime love story, but woven together well just the same. I found myself not wanting to put it down. Would recommend!

Good mystery/love story with some good twists. Throw in an old house and gowns and the English and I was hooked after a couple of chapters. Well developed characters. I did like the narrator.

If you enjoy books with detail, books that you can run your toes through like the grains of sand on a beach, then this one is for you. This is the stuff dreams are made of. Two families and two women fight for survival on the harsh and unpredictable plains of Wyoming. One can almost hear the wind and taste the earth.

Story
The quiet 1960s midwestern life of the Land family is upended when son Davy kills two marauders who have come to harm the family. The morning of his sentencing, Davy (a hero to some, a cold-blooded murderer to others) escapes from his cell, and the Lands set out in search of him. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and they cover territory even more extraordinary than the Badlands, where they search for Davy from their Airstream trailer.
