She has a way with characters
Reviewed: 08-14-20
As a former Naval Aviator and Aerospace engineer I appreciate the correct technical aspects. However, they do not hold a candle to her ability to make you feel like you know her characters. I can count on one hand the number of authors that can not only make me laugh, but can also make me cry.
Thank You for another awesome book!

All about Status screens

I have loved “The Land” from the beginning, but this one let me down. Book spent the majority of it time on Ritctors status. Almost no character interaction. An entire chapter on diarrhea. Not his beat work.

Story
Mary Robinette Kowal continues the grand sweep of alternate history begun in The Calculating Stars. The Fated Sky looks forward to 1961, when mankind is well established on the moon and looking forward to its next step: journeying to, and eventually colonizing, Mars. Of course the noted Lady Astronaut Elma York would like to go, but there’s a lot riding on whoever the International Aerospace Coalition decides to send on this historic - but potentially very dangerous - mission. Could Elma really leave behind her husband and the chance to start a family to spend several years traveling to Mars?

Story
On the edge of the galaxy, a diplomatic mission to an alien planet takes a turn when the Legionnaires, an elite special fighting force, find themselves ambushed and stranded behind enemy lines. They struggle to survive under siege, waiting on a rescue that might never come. In the seedy starport of Ackabar, a young girl searches the crime-ridden gutters to avenge her father's murder; not far away, a double-dealing legionniare-turned-smuggler hunts an epic payday; and somewhere along the outer galaxy, a mysterious bounty hunter lies in wait.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 10-08-18
It took half the book to figure out how it tied into the first. It jumped between characters so often, I wasn’t sure who they were. And without giving away the end, it was disappointing. Once you finally figure out how the books tie together, it begins to suck the hope out of you.
