Story
Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.

Absolute Perfection!
Reviewed: 08-12-20
36 lectures that follow a mostly chronological order from the years just after the end of the American Revolution in the 1780's, through the Constitutional Convention, the first four presidents, and into the 1830's. With each lecture focusing on different founding figures as the course progresses. As always Professor Guelzo delivers a first-class performance which makes it easy to stay engaged and interested.
If you are looking for a course that specifically covers the life of each founding father in a more isolated matter instead of as they appear during the course of events listed above just be aware this is not the approach of this course.

The history of colonial America is a story of extraordinary scope, with Europeans, Africans, and the native peoples of North America interacting in a drama of settlement and conflict that lasted nearly three centuries. Go back in time and relive this epic story in 36 spellbinding lectures. While concentrating on British North America, Professor Allison also covers developments in the colonial outposts of Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the all-important British possessions in the West Indies, which were the source of the most lucrative crop in the New World - sugar - and the reason for the enormous growth in the slave trade.

The Core of Republican Virtue, Is Education Itself
Reviewed: 04-14-20
This course is simply perfection, accomplishing in 12 lectures what might take other courses 24. Tracing the origins of the American Revolution from the early disagreements between the Colonist and Great Britain, to the events that lead to the Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and finally the Constitution. Professor Daniel Robinson delivers this in such an absolutely perfect fashion that it is almost as though you are being told the story from someone who was actually present during these events.

American history is often presented as a tale of dynamic movers and shakers who subdued an untamed wilderness on the way to forging a great nation-all the while leaving philosophy for their European counterparts. But this history neglects the philosophical underpinnings of America. As these 36 lectures demonstrate, America has borne the imprint of influential thinkers from its earliest days, from the Reformation theology of John Calvin to the Enlightenment philosophy of John Locke.

Story
Without even realizing it, we all use the fruits of political philosophy. From liberty to democracy to community, the terms and concepts originated by political philosophers are ingrained in our global consciousness. Yet many of us have an incomplete picture of how these ideas developed and, quite possibly, a skewed perception of their intentions and implications. This highly relevant course sheds light on the labyrinth of Western political and social theory, as well as its influence on modern history.

Great Foundation in Modern Political Philosophy
Reviewed: 03-10-20
A great intro course for Modern Political Philosophy. Providing lectures on a wide range of notable thinkers such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant. Smith, Montesquieu, Burke, Paine, Clausewitz, Hegel, Marx's, Schmitt, Hayek, Rawls, and others. The information in these lectures is almost essential to understanding much of modern political ideas and development. Beyond the first few lectures the timeline runs mid 17th century to the modern age.
Although professor Cahoone's delivery can be slightly monotone at times, for the most part its easy to stay engaged and understand the material even if you have no background on the subject or political philosophy in general.

Story
Ever since we produced our course Thinking About Capitalism, customers have expressed interest in a follow-up course that could help them understand socialism in the same way. After much consideration, we determined that it actually would be more beneficial to create a course that compares and contrasts the two major global economic theories, examining them in ways that move past the polemics many of us are used to and looking at these systems as they relate to one another and the world at large.

Worth a second or third listen!

Balanced course in comparative economics that does not seem to support one system over the other. The narrator / professor does a great job delivering the content in a down to earth, easy to follow manner. The lectures mostly are historical accounts of how these economic systems have been applied in different countries around the globe. You also do not get bogged down in the mathematical side of the "dismal science" which I personally find rather difficult to digest in audio format.

The time has come to remember again. In The Jefferson Lies, prominent historian David Barton sets out to correct the distorted image of once-beloved founding father Thomas Jefferson.

Reviewed: 12-09-19
This audio book attempts to dispel some of the negative facts surrounding Thomas Jefferson. The arguments are very compelling and seem well researched. This includes his relationship with Sally Hemings, opinions on slavery, and religion. It would seem that at least half of the book discusses his religious beliefs. I should also note that this is no biography and probably should not be your first book if your not already familiar with Jefferson.
