Story
Pulitzer Prize, Fiction, 2016. It is April 1975, and Saigon is in chaos. At his villa, a general of the South Vietnamese army is drinking whiskey and, with the help of his trusted captain, drawing up a list of those who will be given passage aboard the last flights out of the country. The general and his compatriots start a new life in Los Angeles, unaware that one among their number, the captain, is secretly observing and reporting on the group to a higher-up in the Viet Cong.

Rarely do I put a book down, but after 7 hours of effort, I had to this time. The story never hooked me. Perhaps it was the melancholy performance. It just didn’t work for me.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Hard to fathom that this is a true story. It’s surreal, gut-wrenching and uplifting. A beautifully crafted and performed book.

Story
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Such a Disconnect

What did you like best about Delivering Happiness? What did you like least?
Zappos is a fantastic company with a fascinating story. Tony's story also great. But, wow, he is a terrible storyteller. He acknowledged the choice to not use an editor (big mistake) and he performed (more like dry read) the story. I love this genre and found many of the stories shared to be relevant to my business. It was just a slug to get through the audiobook.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Tony read the story, I presume, to let his passion come through. It didn't. He was dry, boring and uninteresting. I was so disappointed.
Did Delivering Happiness inspire you to do anything?
Yes, Zappos is a fantastic company. I brought back many of the ideas to my business for future discussions and inspiration. They're such a respectable company with an amazing culture.

Story
People starting out in business tend to seek step-by-step formulas or rules, but in reality there are no magic bullets. Rather, says veteran company-builder Norm Brodsky, there's a mentality that helps street- smart entrepreneurs solve problems and pursue opportunities as they arise. Brodsky shares his hard-earned wisdom every month in Inc. magazine, in the hugely popular "Street Smarts" column he cowrites with Bo Burlingham. Now they've adapted their best advice into a comprehensive guide for anyone running a small business.

I've read many business books, and this is simply one of the best. It's direct, thorough, and directly applicable to everyday business. The lessons extend beyond the entrepreneurial startup phase. They're disciplines. Stop reading this; the book is better.
