Unfortunately, this was a wasted credit in my opinion. What seemed like it could be an outline for a great book turned into something ridiculous. Very unfortunate!

First, her name, secondly her shoes. This is the type of book that’s engaging enough if you want something akin to the Real Housewives to listen to. If that’s your aim, then this is perfect. If you are looking for something engrossing which requires critical thinking, not so much.

Story
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

Picked this up during a sale with mid-range expectations. I was pleasantly surprised! The main character clearly has echoes of Sherlock Holmes and I cannot decide whether the shades of Cormoran Strike is due to the same narrator or not. I’m thinking a combination of the two. Regardless, this is a solid buy.

This story was ridiculous. It was also pretty easy to surmise who the “who” was in it early on. If you enjoy silly, easily digestible Lifetime movie type audiobooks then this is definitely your jam.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Story
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

That obsession led James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. Simply put this was a very unique and intelligent book. It may have been panned by critics for leading the audience on an inappropriately personal and delirious goose chase, but I'd take a goose chase like this over some of the hum-drum "proper" mysteries any day.

I'm not sure if it was the narrator or what, but the sheer amount of whiiiiiiiining in this audiobook was a liability for it. Perhaps had the narrator been different, I wouldn't have minded what came across as endless, pathetic whimpering. On and on and on whilst "exploring" the inner thoughts and worries of each character became so utterly trying. Honestly, at certain points, I simply didn't care what they were thinking anymore. As for the actual plot, it wasn't bad. Decent premise, and it certainly had legs. However, it likely could have been compressed into far less material and been just as effective if not more so.
