Story
She's gotten food and shelter for her family. Her oldest is turning into a wizard, her middle boy is some kind of self-healing monkey, and her youngest is accumulating a small army of pets. That's a bit much to roll with, but when monsters are appearing on the lawn, it's probably for the best. What worries her is the mysterious—and dangerous—"challenge" she knows is fast approaching, and she's got to get her kids and community ready to face it. Some neighbors are ready and willing to pitch in, but others? They might end up being a bigger problem than the alien monsters.

ok good points vs negatives
positive- strong female characters
negative- even main characters seem a little 2 demensional
positive- the little it tells about the world could potentially be setting up an interesting place
negative- bad people/creatures in the book are 1 demensional and openly are proud to be evil... urrrrrg even fricken serial killers usually generally dont think they are the evil ones , even naziz thought they were not evil and thought they were protecting future generations when they killed Jews..... in reality evil people don't think they are evil they are convinced there is a good reason to do what they do ,--- so evil characters inviting Nora to join the side of evil is like a super shallow story line
positive- interesting to see how a male author pictures a gender flipped society
negative- seems a bit like not really much time spent fleshing out the ideas like the gender flip in a game world, or a world where it mentions a few times that iron rots away quickly? but isn't explained. or motivations for characters....

ok I love that this narrator really some effort in and is t just reading blandly...she really seems to put emotion in and tries to get the right energy for each character and situation in the book.

this story glorifies very dangerous choices
Reviewed: 08-19-21
as someone who has worked with horses I can say I would not want ANY person reading this who is not already an experienced horse person who understands equestrian safety. from choices I this that could seriously hurt a horse to choices that would in real like have very likely landed the main character in a morgue drawer.

Ivan Beckley is about to become a fully-qualified doctor in the UK. But he’s not convinced that healthcare works for everyone equally. In this series he uncovers one of the biggest and most insidious injustices in modern medicine. Fixing it could save thousands of lives every year. And yet it’s invisible, unless it directly affects you. Statistics show that black, indigenous and people of colour have worse health outcomes and die more often than white people, across many fields of medicine and diverse illnesses.

I wish they touched more on other bias
Reviewed: 03-15-21
I wish they touched more on other bias such as gender and weight... and how bias can be cumulative if multiple potential bias effeet the patient, it bugs me because some of the stuff they reference could have also have been a great opportunity to bring that up.

great story but a bit much on graphic alien sex
Reviewed: 05-27-20
as usual a great story from this author, but a bit overly detailed for me regarding the alien "finger banging" to use the phrase the female lead character in the book uses....... but the rest of the story is good enough i will certainly purchase the audiobpok version asap if a sequel becomes available.....i just wont listen to it when others could overhear it... but then i am also still waiting for audiobook versions of some of her past books.
