Something different
Reviewed: 05-12-25
I am not the target audience for this but I love fantasy. I really enjoyed the world that was built in the book. The characters feel like friends or people you know. Emotions are real can be very heavy or light and heartfelt.
This is a world building book so it can draw it self out a bit that is to be expected.
The voice narrator did a wonderful job portraying the characters and emotions in this book.
I look forward to where this world will take us next

Story
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

What a good listen!

I did a butt dance in the seat of my car when the audio kicked in and I was greeted with two voices not chapter voices but male reading male & female reading female. It was such a a delightful change. then you get into the banter of this book and that is so much fun. The spice comes in good time and paced well with the story. Plus added bonus characters that the writer wants you to feel like punching you really do want to just punch with the main character! Yes yes the Bad guy sucks too 😜

This is very much a build series. In this book it is that awakening and learning yourself for the main character. You also are just touching the surface of the companions as well.
Like with most things the down side is it's a lot of building up to what's to come so enjoyable yes but I can wait on the next book. (still will come back to find out what happens of course just no feeling to rush)

not bad

Would have preferred the female narrator to read the whole story. The male narrator female voices are lacking for this story. It is a very slow burn story which would be ok if the story had more. I really wanted the story to pick up it was hard to not end this one. Out of the series so far this one is a bit of a lack luster.

Story
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

Growth
Reviewed: 07-24-22
This was a really good story about growth. Sarah Maas has a beautiful way of writing broken people and the growth and rebirth they take to heal themselves. The only complaint I have is that they changed the narrator and it just kind of threw off the book for me personally.
