Story
The book is an autobiographical account of five years in the childhood of naturalist Gerald Durrell. The book is divided into three sections, marking the three villas in which the family lived on the island. Apart from Gerald (the youngest) and Larry, the family comprised their widowed mother, the gun-mad Leslie, and diet-obsessed sister Margo together with Roger the dog.

Story
He's not kept a diary for decades but here, in Dog Days, Andrew Cotter draws inspiration from the great Samuel Pepys; like him, he bears witness to the extraordinary everyday as the world tilts on its axis in our own unsettling era. And so, with Olive and Mabel at his side - actually, dawdling in the long grass or sleeping upside down - Andrew takes a clear-eyed, often hilarious walk through a year that encompasses all of life from the crushingly mundane to the decidedly odd.

Poignant, funny, behind the scenes with Andrew Cotter and his now famous dogs.
In my opinion, he navigates Olive and Mabel’s fame perfectly. No bazaar spin offs or merch, just sharing pure enjoyment of his dogs. His understanding of what their videos, subsequent books, and live appearances have meant to so many people just trying to get through a surreal and often stressful and lonely time is what has made them all so successful and the world so appreciative.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

Good concepts, but could have been condensed by half
Reviewed: 02-06-22
First, let me say my clutter issue is an older relative who rarely gets rid of anything. It will be mine to deal with someday and it is already overwhelming. This book addresses this type and magnitude of clutter only briefly so wasn’t very relevant to my interest.
However, some helpful concepts-
Keeping only what *fits* in the drawer, cupboard, bin, whatever it is that you keep certain items. Your favorites go in first, what doesn’t fit isn’t your favorite and goes. I personally do have room for everything I currently have, but like the idea of identifying only my favorites (shoes, scarves, coffee mugs, etc) then really considering why I would keep the rest (that I’m probably not using) even though I have room.
She simplifies the process into strictly decluttering- not organizing, not thinking items through, not doing valuations, not finally doing x with your mother in law’s crystal- just decluttering. Definitely gets rid of a few hang ups for me.
She seems like a creative type who sees potential in almost anything- but most of that potential turns to clutter. I think many people can identify with that.
I admire her for putting her own clutter issues out there and sharing her experiences. I only gave 3 stars though because all of this information could have been condensed into a much shorter book. I wish she had gone into more detail on options to explore for where the clutter can go. Clean out services can be very expensive. Selling small items online is often far more trouble than it’s worth. Charities can be very particular about the type and categories of items they will take. All of this can derail the cutting process. The author narrated well- I always prefer the author of a book like this as the narrator.

Devolved into a cheap romance novel
Reviewed: 06-28-21
First book was OK, with potential for series and characters to develop. This devolved quickly into how I imagine a cheap paperback romance novel would read. Huge shame, the author is a gifted writer and storyteller for something this tawdry. I’m not even halfway through but I can’t stand the main character anymore. Her gentleman friend would do well to walk away. It could have been SO much more interesting. Returning this book and done with this series. May entertain another title by this author as she is obviously talented but her gifts are wasted in this effort.

Liked the setting, overall story but became too fantastic and like a soap opera with multiple characters coming back from the grave. Ended too abruptly after such a drawn out telling.
Narrator was fantastic.

1 star missing only due to difficulty to navigate

A perfect way to make scripture come alive. Great narration, but a touch over the top at times (too much drama where the story didn't necessarily call for it); music could also be a bit repetitive but overall a wonderful performance bringing an element of first hand experience to the ancient text. Not being able to find a specific book or verse is a major issue that should be addressed. However, it's been a very satisfying experience to listen while doing gardening, etc and take in multiple books and gospels as opposed to reading a few verses. Brings more context and richer understanding of His true book.

Marvellously atmospheric tale of strangers summoned to a grand but neglected villa on the Italian coast. Each of them has been named in a will, but nobody knows their benefactress.... Four very different people are named in a will. Delia, an opera singer robbed of her voice by illness; George, an idealistic scientist who cannot face what his skills have created; Marjorie, desperately poor and unable to dislodge her writer’s block; and Lucius, ostensibly in control but whose personal life is in chaos.

Well researched, original sources
Reviewed: 10-30-17
If you like history with plenty of original sources, you'll enjoy this book. Not much new information but, as one reviewer stated, more info about the other accused and the actual trial itself than I've encountered before. Weir also names many places and relations relevant to the people involved which I very much appreciated. A bit repetitive with facts and events at times throughout. The ghost tales portion was fluff and uninteresting from a historical perspective; a paragraph could have sufficed about the significance of so many legends coming from this event, not a retelling of tall tales in a non-fiction history book.
The narrator had a very nice voice and pace, but tended towards a knowing, dramatic tone better suited to a romance novel than historical non-fiction. Overall, interesting and well worth the time and credit.
