About this listen

Fabulous family saga of secrets held through two generations, set against the atmospheric background of the Lake District at Christmas. The year 1936 is drawing to a close. Winter grips Wetmoreland and causes a rare phenonmenon: The lakes freeze. For two local families, the Richardsons and the Grindleys, this will bring unexpected upheaval, as the frozen lake entices long-estranged siblings and children to return home for the holiday season.

Some are aware of what is happening in Europe; others don't want to know. Everyone's keen to put aside their troubles - money worries, love tangles, career problems, domestic rifts - and enjoy themselves skating while they can. But one visitor carries the seed of violence, and not even the redoubtable matriarch of the Richardson clan can prevent the carefully buried secrets of the past from reappearing and transforming everything.

A compelling blend of family closeness and strife, dazzling passion and the dark influence of history, this is an enthralling listen to curl up and savour.

lots of characters

I have to say that I am surprised that I ended up enjoying this book as much as I did! Listening to a book with so many different characters and how they are all interconnected was a little bit confusing. But ultimately the characters were well-written, plenty to dislike and plenty of quirky characters to fall in love with. #happyending #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Lots of twists and turns

Narrator does a fantastic job with all of the characters’ different voices and accents. The story was very long with many twists and turns that kept me connected. Family drama is always compelling!

Another great story

..... with many twists and turns. A lot of characters for sure but if you keep them straight it makes for a wonderful story and a great read. Elizabeth Edmondson does not disappoint. I didn’t think I’d like a story with a cold setting in the frozen north of England but there were so many parts of it that can warm your heart and bring to life this delightful tale.

Superb narration.........interesting characters

The story took a bit to get started tho this wasn't distracting. Twist & turns in the story line kept my interest. The characters were richly textured by the deft narration of Ms McKenzie including changing voices and accents thus adding authenticity to the characters.

Good story about family and secrets

A bit predictable but the characters were so interesting and/or endearing you wanted to know how it finally turns out for each one of them.

Frozen

Many, many characters to keep track of and the story drags a bit. But you'll see it all come together towards the end and be surprised.
The narrator does a terrific job, seeing how many voices she had portrayed.

A marvelously entertaining family saga with hints of Downton Abbey.

I am so pleased to a found the works of Emily Edmondson. This book is the third book by the author that I have listened to… OK I’ve binged on them. Each of them are entertaining and a great mysteries. This particular book has an extensive cast of characters that you learn to love and/or hate. I have a visual person and love to travel. The author has a very unique way of describing the settings. It’s immersive. Highly recommend it!

Almost couldn’t stop listening, it was so well written!

I liked how each characters inner thoughts were revealed as the action and events took place.
The descriptions of physical places, weather events, local townsfolk and, pre-WWII sentiments in England made everything become visible in my mind.
Can’t wait to listen to more of Edmondson’s books.
