About this listen

In A Banker's Journey, financial journalist and historian Daniel Gross, who, like Edmond Safra, traces his heritage to Aleppo, Syria, reconstructs the public life of an intensely private man. With exclusive access to Safra's personal archives, Gross tracks the banker's remarkable journey from Beirut to Milan, São Paulo, Geneva, and New York—to the pinnacle of global finance.

Edmond Safra was fifteen in 1947, when his father sent him to establish a presence in Milan, Italy. Fluent in six languages, and with an eye for value, managing risk, and personal potential, Safra was in perpetual motion until his tragic death in 1999. The modern, global financial empire he built was based on timeless principles: a banker must protect his depositors and avoid excessive leverage and risk. In an age of busts and bailouts, Safra posted remarkable returns while rarely suffering a credit loss.

From a young age, Safra assumed the mantle of leadership in the Syrian-Lebanese Jewish community, providing personal aid, supporting the communities that formed in exile, and championing Sephardic religious and educational efforts in Israel and around the world. Safra's life of achievement in the twentieth century offers enduring lessons for those seeking to make their way in the twenty-first century. He inspired generations to make the world a better place.

This was such an amazing listen. The things this man did before his 20th birthday is just unbelievable! I love that he was "old school" and all about integrity. Crazy what American Express did to him and his ending is just heart breaking. I went down the rabbit hole and read more about his k1ller. So wild!

His life was amazing

Edmond Safra was a financial giant of the 20th century. He transformed his father’s little bank in a massive global financial empire. Entered markets that many didn’t dare - Switzerland, Brazil and USA - and succeeded by all possible measures.

But this book is not about Edmond Safra. It’s about a fictional character, resembling Saint Francis. The book tries to picture Safra as one of the most kind and smart people to ever live. After a few pages it becomes obvious that the writer is not interested in telling a real story about a real man with real flaws and real merits.

I’ll give two starts only for the research behind the book. It is well done. But it delivers a tailored version of it aiming at pleasing someone who really loved Edmond and wanted him pictured in this way.

Could be an amazing biography, if it weren’t about a fictional character
