Publisher's summary

Do current political events make your head swim? Do you struggle to understand how Ukraine’s nationhood fits into the larger picture of history? Look no further than this brief but thorough exploration of Ukrainian history.

Ukraine is a geographically diverse country with the unfortunate fate of being sandwiched between empires. Though this is frequently explored no further than the global conflicts of the 20th century, in reality, Ukraine’s struggle for self-determination has far deeper roots than most people realize.

See the splendor of the Kyivan Rus, gallop with the Golden Horde across the Ukrainian steppe, encounter the legendary Cossacks, and witness the terror of the tsars. From the Romans to the Mongols to the Russians, Ukraine has seen it all and remained uniquely Ukrainian through it all.

Within A Brief History of Ukraine, you’ll find an exploration of how a singular people could be born out of so many crisscrossing empires, all vying for supremacy. Rather than being destroyed by the crucible that geography placed them in, the Ukrainian people became stronger, taking on different dimensions of each culture that came and went. Come discover the unique heritage of the Ukrainian people, and learn of their sorrows, struggles, and triumphs that have continued well into the present day.

A must read to understand Ukraine’s current plight

I’m a big Dan Brown (author of The Da Vinci Code and many others) fan and this book had me enthralled just as much as his books. Except in THIS book, the history is all real! I have so much more empathy for Ukraine and its people after listening to this book. They truly epitomize the strength of the human spirit! If more people would read this book they would understand why this current war between Ukraine and Russia is so important for the people of Ukraine to hold on to their country. Highly recommend!!!

Great Condensed History

This book does a great job not focusing on the current issues in the region; more, it gives you a history that starts early and thoroughly moves quickly to the present. You get a good sense of the background of the people and the region. By the time you get to current times, the issues are easier to view from the context of the people's history. I enjoy ancient history, so my favorite was the Pre-Roman empire era and the Tribal evolution of the region's politics. And who doesn't like hearing about the often underestimated."barbarians" and the part they played in shaping many nations' history in the region? I think the book is laid out nicely for a quick brush-up on the country's history and people. The narrator was clear and easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history, especially anyone involving themselves in current efforts in the region. This will help you see things with a clearer historical context of the people and the country.

WHAT A RESILIENT PEOPLE!

Now I understand why Ukrainians are so determined to defend their freedom! It’s been a long history of deception, abuse, bullying, and disappointments at all levels. My heart just goes out to them and as before, they WILL prevail.
Thank you so much for educating us a little more about Ukraine and how much they’ve been through.

Really good

This book does a remarkable job of staying away from the region's current problems; instead, it provides you a history that begins early and swiftly advances to the present. You have a clear understanding of the history of the locals and the area. By the time you reach the present, the problems are simpler to understand in light of the people's past.

educational, good narration

I enjoyed this listen.
This book offers the background for understanding that Ukraine’s fight for independence has been going on for centuries.
Every time they achieve independence neighboring forces intervene.
This history is easy to listen to and a valuable resource.
I recommend this audiobook.

Woooooow, I learned so much!

I don't know what I was expecting, but from the first words uttered, I was completely engrossed. This book didn't feel like a textbook but was definitely edutainment. The deep, rich history of the regions is astounding. I did not know, or easily correlate, the Huns, Catherine the Great, the development of eastern Catholicism, rise and falls of empires and so much more. The marriages and alliances and the treachery. It was like I was listening to Game of Thrones, lol! This is definitely one of those great listens for a roadtrip or long commute. But beware; you may find yourself watching the hours of the clock to get back to the book if you have to pause for any reason, say, your job, lol!

Concise

A Brief History of Ukraine sheds light to listeners on not just the current political situation happening with Russia but also a bit of European history from the perspective of the local people there. It gives you a better understanding of why Ukraine is different from Russia. It has its own culture and its own history. If you're curious about why Ukraine has always wanted its independence, check out this book.
