About this listen

2019 was the last great year for the world economy.

For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it.

America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Globe-spanning supply chains are only possible with the protection of the U.S. Navy. The American dollar underpins internationalized energy and financial markets. Complex, innovative industries were created to satisfy American consumers. American security policy forced warring nations to lay down their arms. Billions of people have been fed and educated as the American-led trade system spread across the globe.

All of this was artificial. All this was temporary. All this is ending.

In The End of the World is Just the Beginning, author and geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan maps out the next world: a world where countries or regions will have no choice but to make their own goods, grow their own food, secure their own energy, fight their own battles, and do it all with populations that are both shrinking and aging.

The list of countries that make it all work is smaller than you think. Which means everything about our interconnected world - from how we manufacture products, to how we grow food, to how we keep the lights on, to how we shuttle stuff about, to how we pay for it all - is about to change.

A world ending. A world beginning. Zeihan brings readers along for an illuminating (and a bit terrifying) ride packed with foresight, wit, and his trademark irreverence.

Well constructed big picture

I enjoyed how the major trends were constructed and find myself in agreement. However where I have deeper expertise (agriculture and human and animal nutrition) I found some of the details and forecasts lacking. for example rotational grazing is proven to produce animal protein with many positive environmental impacts. And animal protein as the majority of human calories is critical to adult health and fertility and child development as we are undeniably a carnivore based omnivore. So take the details of these forecasts with a grain of salt, while yielding the value of his macro insights.

Grim but Necessary

I have read all of Mr Zeihan's books and watched many of his lectures on YouTube. I find all his work well researched and compelling. I don't always like his conclusions but I cannot fault his logic or the numbers that inform his conclusions. I hope his work will help all of us make the necessary hard choices the future will bring.

Thank You Breaking Point

This book was great. Peter was amazing to listen to and was able to bring a great level of humor to the material. I can't wait to listen to it again. Thank you Breaking Point for having Peter on the show so I could discover Peter and this book. I will be picking up Peter's previous books as well.

Deeply researched with insightful predictions

I’ve followed Peter since he came to speak at an event in Park City in Jan 2020. It’s been surreal to see the events of the last 2 1/2 years from the lens he provided then. It will be equally interesting to view the next few years from the lens provided in this book.

One of two essential reads for everyone

If you have stumbled upon this review, please know that I believe that there are two books everyone should read right now. The first is Rethinking Humanity, available as a free pdf download (or in physical form from Amazon) from RethinkX, a global think tank ran by Professor Tony Seba of Stanford and James Arbib, a renowned investment analyst and founder of Tellus Mater. The other book is this one.

Together they will make sense of the strange things happening in the world today, and show possible paths forward. I found the two complimentary as many of the warnings in Rethinking Humanity seemed vague, but Mr. Zeihan is anything but. However, Rethinking Humanity offers more concrete paths forward than this book; Mr. Zeihan’s life’s work is to warn of what is coming and the challenges we face, while Rethinking Humanity is about looking at trends of disruption and innovation, and showing what could be if we all learn now and get our act together.

Avoiding the (now current and ongoing) collapse of our old civilization and bridging to a newer, better one will take knowledge, hard action, and worldwide willingness to give up old, even ancient, ways of thinking and being able to adapt. Unfortunately for many cultures, this will be harder to do, and they will see massive calamity. Will the one you live in be one of those? Read these books, and ask yourself what dear things you hold desperately to that are incompatible with your nation’s or culture’s survival, and know that now, more than ever, it’s time to adapt and change.

Smart man that does his homework.

The author does a great job walking the reader through the history of the world to inform on why their conclusions should be considered seriously. This book will get you thinking. I recommended it to my family and friends.

Big if True

A very entertaining and informative look at what the future of the world could hold, I hope the end of the world doesn't become that interesting.
