About this listen

The ladies of Clerkenwell Central Hall are none too pleased at having their temperance meetings disrupted by the rowdy communists next door, but for Miss Olive Stapleton in particular, the uneasy coexistence proves fatal when she is found stabbed through the heart with a paper knife.

Enter Freddy Pilkington-Soames, who’s been recruited by British Intelligence to investigate a suspected communist plot to stir up a general strike. Freddy thinks there’s more to Miss Stapleton’s death than meets the eye, but as he delves more deeply into the mystery, it only becomes more puzzling.

What is the connection between the murder and the coded newspaper advertisements? Is a Welsh firebrand politician really as harmless as he seems? And what does the beautiful wife of an Austrian revolutionary philosopher want from him?

It all points to one thing: danger ahead. But time is running out, and Freddy must act quickly to stop the conspirators or risk becoming the unwitting pawn in a deadly game that threatens to bring the country to its knees.

Quirky anf great fun

Freddy Returns to yet a new problem with charm and humour and a true sense of the day. I really enjoy Clara Bensons novels, with her fresh crisp stories and wonderful characters. They introduce you to a time and a place so different from our own. A good mystery to guess and as well. Excellent narration

An old fashioned mystery

For those who like mysteries with humor . A time and place in which politics and publishing was radicalized.

Freddy rides again

Another fun romp of detection for Freddy. If you haven't read Freddy's previous adventures, this book should still stand alone just fine. But if you have, you will be delighted to meet Freddy again. This book also has a direct link to the 5th Angela Marchbank mystery, The Incident at Fives Castle.

We have mysterious Communist activities, a group of women promoting non-drinking, several pretty young women and lots of silly and/or self important young men. Readers of P. G. Wodehouse will recognize the type shown in Freddy and his friends as they would have fit in perfectly at the Drones Club with Bertie Wooster and buddies. This between WWI and WWII English mystery novel is a fun listen. Gethyn Edwards does a fine job with the various characters and the spirit of the book.

Highly recommended.

Always a fun read

I always enjoy a Freddy Story😊. It’s and easy and a fun read. I enjoy the narrator who does a good job with the multiple characters. It’s easy to think that there are multiple cast members. Looking forward for the latest book to come out on audible. Thanks
