Publisher's summary

Magic in the blood. Danger in the streets.

Lord Crane has never had a lover quite as elusive as Stephen Day. He knows Stephen's job as justiciar requires secrecy, but the magician is doing his disappearing act more than seems reasonable - especially since Crane will soon return to his home in China. When a blackmailer threatens to expose their illicit relationship, there's only one thing stopping Crane from leaving the country he loathes: Stephen.

Stephen has problems of his own. As he investigates a plague of giant rats sweeping London, his sudden increase in power, boosted by his blood-and-sex bond with Crane, is rousing suspicion that he's turned warlock. With all eyes on him, the threat of exposure grows. Stephen could lose his friends, his job, and his liberty over his relationship with Crane. He's not sure if he can take that risk much longer. Crane isn't sure if he can ask him to.

The rats are closing in, and something has to give....

Just as good as the first!

Just like the title says. The characters are just as good and fun and interesting as the first book in this series. Plus character development and a good pace with a realistic source of villainy. I'm very pleased I found these books!

Fantastic books, laughable smut narration

This series hits the "husbands on adventures" fix I've been looking for - the characters are entertaining, the magic is fun to read, the mysteries just the right side of not quite predictable.

The narrator does an excellent job with most of the story. He has a very nice, smooth, voice and carries the dialogue well.

...and then we get to the sex scenes, and the acting is so over the top and unsexy that I pretty much always end up laughing. It's more shouty than powerful, and misses the seductive mark by a mile. I gave grace for it in the first book, but since the problem is still readily apparent in the second book, it's worth mentioning. I feel the need to get the ebook to reread these scenes just so I can enjoy the prose without grimacing or laughing!

Flew by

Waited to have this trilogy in audiobook format for years now and the time listening to book 2 just flew right by. can't wait for book 3.

Rodents of Unusual Size

This was a short but interesting story. I liked the way multiple seemingly unrelated mysteries came together with a connection to their past in China. And, just when you think the story is over, it swings back in with an unexpected right hook!

From strong to even stronger

A fantastic story and a brilliant romance.

Everything great about the first of the series but with the refining and perfection needed to perfect the series. Any problems I had with the series are gone and everything I loved about the first book is even better in this instalment.

Well worth a read.

Deliciously naughty little mysteries

I'm loving these. The perfect antidote to terrible traffic, I found myself looking forward to the commute, turning off Waze, and taking the slow route home.

Great

A Case of Possession is another corker of a book by KJ Charles. Stephen and Lucien’s story continues in London. We meet Stephen’s fellow justiciars including his partner Esther, and we also meet Lucien’s friends and acquaintances from his business and his time in Shanghai.

Lucien and Stephen’s relationship grows and deepens as Stephen investigates murders that are committed through the use of giant rats. The scenes with the rats are very descriptive to the point of horrifying but so well done. The intimate scenes are very hot. I really enjoy Charles’s writing and the worlds she creates. The historical background is obviously well researched and meticulous.

I listened to the audiobook. Cornell Collins does another fantastic job with his interpretation and the difference between character voices. I’ve said it in other reviews, but he adds another dimension to the books.

I really enjoyed A Case of Possession and already started the following book.

Magical!

Stephen and Crane continue to steal my heart. I absolutely loved this one! The mystery, and the magic and evil, but also love and friendship! Scary at times, and absolutely swoon worthy at others!
The narration as always, amazing and on point. I couldn’t imagine listening to this by someone else.
We get to know some secondary characters more, and I loved it! The killer rats, and the extra shorty story at the end were icing on the cake!
Amazing!

Exciting with a new twist

The storyline and plotline were simply as well written, narrated and direct. at times breath takeingly exotic.

A well done period mystery, fun book cover

The reader did an excellent job performing the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters relationship but the attitude of Stephen's co-workers was tiresome. They were officious dullards. The beginning of the story felt like it was missing a chapter.
