About this listen

Sir Philip Rookwood is the disgrace of the county. He's a rake and an atheist, and the rumors about his hellfire club, the Murder, can only be spoken in whispers. (Orgies. It's orgies.)

Guy Frisby and his sister, Amanda, live in rural seclusion after a family scandal. But when Amanda breaks her leg in a riding accident, she's forced to recuperate at Rookwood Hall, where Sir Philip is hosting the Murder.

Guy rushes to protect her, but the Murder aren't what he expects. They're educated, fascinating people, and the notorious Sir Philip turns out to be charming, kind - and dangerously attractive.

In this private space where anything goes, the longings Guy has stifled all his life are impossible to resist...and so is Philip. But all too soon, the rural rumor mill threatens both Guy and Amanda. The innocent country gentleman has lost his heart to the bastard baronet - but does he dare lose his reputation too?

Contains mature themes.

the performance matches the greatness of the story

I absolutely adore this book, and it's hard to believe anything could enhance it but Cornell Collins does the impossible and makes An awesome book extraordinary

Charming / a fun read

I agree with the comments / reviews that have already been made. This book is charming and fun and takes you away to another time and place. It is not action-filled but it has a nice plot. I can't help wishing there had been a great murder mystery mixed in. Oh well. Great relaxing read. The narrator, Cornell Collins, is wonderful!

Delightfully entertaining.

A refreshing retreat from the typical best seller. Paced and performed with finesse. I hope to listen to more from the author and reader in the future.

Barbara Cartland for Gays

I find these stories by KJ Charles a delightful and guilty pleasure. They are well written and the characters well developed. The steamy gay erotic scenes set in Regency drawing rooms are a delight for the imagination. I can't get enough of his books

My favorite KJ Charles book

Her other works tend to have a lot more action and mystery and whatnot, and I love every one of them. This book is particularly satisfying for the richness and dimension of its characters, and their interactions and growth. Also, the performance is one of the best I've heard. A gem!

Good about consent

Low angst house party - after a leg injury is on the mend. I like the author but only picked this up (not being in my audible package) after seeing a tweet commenting on how ‘spraining an ankle turned into an extensive visit leading to marriage, back in the day.’ This is that plot🤣. It also takes on the feuding families & virgin/whore dynamics - more sensibly than most.

It’s fine but less adventurous than some others they’ve written. Some of the secondary characters were a little thin but I guess that leaves room for the author to flesh them out more fully in future books. (Plus a 6-fingered man!) What it excels at is consent, informed discussion, personal passions, & found family.I was very relieved when the “we need to split up for appearances” talk squashed any misunderstanding immediately. Soul cleansing sensibility there.

Steam: Medium-low. Despite starring an “oh hey, I’m gay? Guess so” virgin, there is low drama about the fact of it. The book concentrates more on the pleasure of discovery than the fears, which helps the low angst vibe. M/M/M is discussed but not shown on page. M/M action happens on page but remains low key, for all the neighborhood’s speculation about degeneracy. There’s some budding d/s kink starting out but these guys go a little slow since Guy is new to romance of any sort.

Narration: Good, except there are several instances where phrase endings audibly fall off as if the microphone got out of range. Some reviewers questioned the Jewish doctor’s accent but I didn’t find it heavy handed & it helped to differentiate speakers. I usually like the narrator, though, so consider that.
