About this listen

"Oh, something is bound to go wrong, but one might as well start out from a position of optimism, don’t you think?" said Angela.

It's fair to say that Freddy Pilkington-Soames is not having a good day. His grandmother is threatening to marry a lounge lizard, his old friend has lost her lover, a racehorse has been kidnapped, a priceless diamond has gone missing, and everybody seems to think he should sort it all out.

(Oh, and there's a dead body on the terrace.)

Now Freddy's on the sunny French Riviera, caught in the crossfire of a feud between an audacious thief he's locked horns with before and a murderous gang, who will stop at nothing to get what they want. He'd keep his head down if he could, but there are questions that need answering. Who took the diamond? Who is double-crossing whom? And is his grandmother's intended quite all he seems?

(And where did that dead body go?)

A political scandal at the highest level is looming and the future of an international conference hangs in the balance, and once again it's up to Freddy to save the day - in more ways than one.

Love this series

This is a great series. I enjoy reading the adventures of Freddy and the narrator does an excellent job. I can't wait for the next book!

Not sure…

It began well. I think Clara is a fine writer and had she really been authoring in the 1920s she would have definitely been one of the better selling practitioners. These are called cozy mysteries but I think that is an unflattering label. These novels are very economically written, truly likable characters, intelligent dialogue, logically and inventively plotted and genuinely entertaining. They don’t descend to trite or maudlin themes; her detective is not a recovering alcoholic single father with emotional issues blah blah blah. He is in fact a most entertaining and insouciant fellow who doesn’t play the victim. All of the attributes to my mind lift these works well above the current norm of bestsellers to a true level of enjoyment unfortunately less obtainable these days than one hundred years ago.
This entry in the series is not my favorite but still very good. Thanks for the listening pleasure.

Good

Glad that Freddie hooks up with Angela to help her find her husband. Of course jewels are involved and it is a long way to find answers!

Great plot

Enjoyed thsi book. I was so happy that Angela Marchmont was woven into the story. I really don’t care for the narrator of this series.

A great story

Another mystery, you’ll enjoy until the end! A main character that you’ll want as a friend:)

good fun

Jolly good fun, the usual light and lighthearted plot, and although I find the narration style peculiar it is surprisingly effective.

VeryGood Book

All of her books keep me hooked from the beginning. Stories and characters are easy to become involved with. Who does not like a good old fashioned murder or jewel theft. There’s no smut or ugly words in her books. Just a clean old fashioned mystery to solve!

Another Fine Romp for Freddie & Angela

Light-hearted adventure, mystery, & romance. A favorite feel- good series, along with it's parallel Angela Marchmont collection.

Totally disappointing

I have read/listened to a few of the authors Angela books and I do not like them. Angela is a weak main character. So…. Imagine my disappointment when I bpught this book as a Freddie P-S book and shortly realized the main character was Angela. The author managed to fit in a bit of Freddie but basically it was about Angela and her obnoxious and rude boyfriend. In retail sales this would be considered “bait and switch”. If you are a Freddie fan don’t bother, he has little room in this book. If you are an Angela fan then this is for you.
