About this listen

As suspenseful as it is heartwarming, set in Jerusalem, the latest Christmas novel from New York Times best-selling author Anne Perry is the perfect holiday treat.

When Victor Narraway, Thomas Pitt's close friend and former boss, and his new wife, Lady Vespasia, travel to Jerusalem for a Christmas holiday, Vespasia cannot shake the feeling that they are being watched. Then, an old man leaves a mysterious envelope for Narraway - and is murdered soon after. But it is only when the couple is ambushed the following morning that they realize they are in grave danger. Armed only with the instructions from the message in the envelope, they immediately set out on a journey through the Holy Land while their unknown enemy pursues them all the while.

Like all of Anne Perry's books, this one was interesting and riveting. The setting was very different - the Middle East. I liked the characters a lot in this new setting.

An Interesting Book

Totally got the concept but this went far afield of being a murder mystery.

Too Obtuse

Very reflective symbols! Her deeply held views shine here above all her other works. It turned my difficult week around.

The very best of her Christma novellas...

This is a short novel which follows two characters from the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Engaging and excellent narration.

Great story to listen to.

I know all the Pitt mysteries nearly by heart, and I have to say, this is my favorite. Ms. Perry allows herself to express her faith without ambiguity, and it's beautiful, especially in the characters of Lord and Lady Narraway. She strikes the perfect balance between Narraway's pragmatism and Vespasia"s heart, with strong doses of the opposite in each. This one is short, but it's a masterpiece.

My Favorite

The Christmas series has been uplifting and enjoyable. This one is a stark departure from previous stories. A boring lecture on religious unity. Totally lost involvement with people we look forward to sharing the holiday with. I kept hoping Victor and Vispasia would get dug into a real story. All we got was a spiritual, philosophical exposition. Yawn.

Disappointing departure from beloved mysteries

I like a good who-dun-it as much as the next person, but this book is not it. It’s incredibly distracting, because the character responses are not realistic and there are quite a few slow spots.

Stick to the drawing room

Nope, this book was a miss for me. I didn’t get the message and a little bit too much religious even for me for Christmas.

Message?

I wish I hadn't wasted a credit on this. The characters include an angel, a dark angel (Satan?), a boy named Yeshua. Vespasian and Narramore spend most of their time philosophizing inside their heads. I just kept waiting for it to be over and wishing I hadn't wasted the credit.

Religious fantasy, not the usual historical fiction
