About this listen

It wouldn’t quite be Christmas without a holiday mystery decorated with all the Victorian trimmings as only New York Times best-selling author Anne Perry can render it. Now the tradition continues as mayhem is once again found under the mistletoe, and intrigue stalks the cobblestone streets and gas-lit parlors of old London Town.

Formerly a river urchin living on the banks of the Thames, nine-year-old Worm has never experienced a family Christmas. But thanks to a job at Hester Monk’s clinic in Portpool Lane, he’s found a makeshift family in kindly volunteer Mrs. Claudine Burroughs and curmudgeonly old bookkeeper Squeaky Robinson.

When Worm witnesses the abduction of a beautiful woman by a pair of ruffians just days before Christmas, he frantically turns to Squeaky for help. A one-time brothel owner, Squeaky knows the perils of interfering in nasty business, but he can’t bear to disappoint Worm - or leave the boy to attempt a rescue on his own. What neither of the would-be saviors expects, however, is that the damsel in distress already has her dilemma well in hand … and is taking steps to bring her captors to justice for crimes far worse than kidnapping. But the rogues, as cunning as they are deadly, are not to be underestimated. The aid of cynical old Squeaky and hopeful young Worm just might make the difference between a merry triumph over evil and a terrible yuletide tragedy.

The audio volume was way too low. I could not boost it on my iPad. I listen to audiobooks constantly, and had this problem once before.
I really wanted to like this book, but I could not care enough for the characters. The story is all over the map. I'm thinking of returning it.

This is the delightful tale of a nine year old former river urchin, Worm, who is used to living on the Thames River, but now has the good fortune to work in a clinic for the under privileged and have a makeshift family of sorts. After witnessing a beautiful woman being kidnapped, Worm convinces a friend, Squeaky to help him rescue the woman. Squeaky relies on his street smarts (from his days as a brothel owner) to find out what has become of the woman, and he's determined to protect the young, Worm as he uncovers the dark mystery. This is a wonderful story set in old England. I am SO hoping that Audible gets the description corrected, because it would be a shame for listeners to miss this excellent book!

FIX THIS DESCRIPTION, ITS FOR THE WRONG BOOK!

The story was great-I love how the relationship between Worm and Squeaky developed. The narrator did a good job with the male voices and Worm’s voice. However, there were a couple of places in the recording that were put together out of order. I remember hearing the discrepancies when i first listened to the story, but forgot to comment. I’m a great fan of Anne Perry’s Christmas stories (as well as her other series) so was willing to piece together the correct sequence for the actions.

Very confusing

This was another fabulous Christmas story. Two of my favorite characters star in this story, Worm and Squeaky Robinson. I love Worm' s innocence even though he has been on the street for most of his young life. I love how Squeaky has developed into a decent person who shows his care of others in his own gruff manner. The story brought fears to my eyes at times but also had some rollicking excitement.

Fabulous

Loved it but volume was low and had to be very near to hear it

As other reviewers have mentioned, there are 2 chapters out of order...chapter 5 should be chapter 3 and chapter 11 should be chapter 12. Re downloading as Support suggested did not work. I am waiting for further investigation, but have not heard anything back. My first audible.com experience, and I am disappointed.

The description of this book is wrong. It's for A Christmas Return. This story is about Worm's adventures.

Anne Perry never disappoints. This was a great book with mystery and the Christmas holiday. The reader will not be disappointed. Roslyn Landor as the narrator was great.

This is a good story, but it is not the one in the description. Also, the last couple of chapters are out of order. I’m returning this one.

A classic Anne Perry Christmas story with characters from the William Monk series. However, some of the chapters are out of order. Other reviews have mentioned this, but there has been no correctionto the audio book.
