Nice but left me rather indifferent...

"A Clue for Adrianna" is an ambiguous book for me to rate... On the one hand, when forced to stop listening somewhere in the middle I didn't feel that nagging need to finish, so I only returned to it after about a week, a very long break in my case. On the other hand, while listening I didn''t have any negative feelings about it, either - no irritation, no eye-rolling, nothing that ususally happens if a book is a crap... So a 3-star-rating seems to be quite fair - a book that gives me pleasure while listening but not such a gripping tale that I have to stay up late at night to see what happens next...

The premise sounded exciting - a young woman who has to prove herself to be worthy of inheriting her ancestral home, a riddle she has to solve, a man she might fall for... all that should constitute an unputdownable tale, I thought. And while all the elements are there, and although the main characters themselves are likeable, obviously decent and warm-hearted people, somehow the tale isn't as intriguing and emotionally engaging as I expected it to be. Maybe it's because the pace of the tale is quite slow, evolving around everyday activities of Adrienne restoring the house, having conversations with her new neighbours and friends, with nothing much really important or unusual happening... And when something big does finally happen, it blends into the other stuff without really standing out, it lacks that emotional tension that is needed to make your heart beat faster in your chest - partly because the danger turns out not to be dangerous at all and the rescue/salvation comes too fast and too easily...

But all that said, it's not a bad book. I wouldn't call it a romance (there's too little romancing for that, for sure), rather a contemporary fiction, as it focuses on the main characters' personal development; they face whatever life brings them and do their best to come out stronger and better... And that part of the book - that overall feeling of hope - is what I did like.

As for the narration, it's my first book by Ms Leslie and I generally liked it, though I think that there are parts when she should be a bit more emotional. Some of the events should evoke strong emotions in the listener - but are read rather indifferently by Ms Leslie, flattening the emotional load they should carry... But she does voices quite well and reads at a good pace, so overall I'd say it's quite a decent interpretation of the book.

A clue for Adrianna

I found the beginning intruging so I kept on listening. I have to say the slow pace did not put me off the book which is something I hate in a book but the Adrianna's stupidity did. For an intellegent woman she did things that really surprised me.
It is not a bad book but it is not the best either.
This is my personal opinion and others might disagree with me.

A nice read!

contemporary, women-s-fiction, romantic

A nice comfortable story to enjoy after a stressful day. The MBA gets downsized, dumped, and sent back across country to be advised that her contentious elderly aunt has died and left her a complicated legacy to be approved every step of the way by the exasperating family attorney. Ups and downs on the Maryland shore match the many growth opportunities and deepening friendships. Excellent read!
Lisa Leslie has the smooth delivery and pleasant voices which add to the enjoyment.
