About this listen

On her 49th birthday, Anna Fergusson, Boston neuroscientist and dedicated introvert, arrives at an unwanted crossroads when the funding for her research lab is cut. With her confidence shattered and her future uncertain, on impulse she rents a cabin for a year on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. However Turtle Island, alive with sea birds and nesting Green turtles, is not the retreat she expected.

Here she finds love - for the eccentric islanders who become her family; for Tom, the laid-back turtle whisperer; and for the turtles whose ancient mothering instincts move her to tears. But Anna finds that even on her idyllic drop in the ocean, there is pain, and as the months fly past, her dream for a new life is threatened by a darkness that challenges everything she has come to believe about the power of love.

Evocative and thought-provoking, A Drop in the Ocean is a story about second chances and hard lessons learned in the gentlest of ways.

The biological information was very informative and reminded me of my studies in Human Genetics.

The Huntington’s Disease research.

The story reminded me of a Seinfeld episode, it’s a story about what you did that day. Not my cup of tea.

I enjoyed the narration

This isn't a bad book, but it is definitely a first effort. The prose is a bit flat, and the characters seem lifeless. Also, the plotting is rather sporadic - there are long sequences of beautiful nature descriptions ( by far the strongest element in the story) and then something happens ( bad weather, a premature birth, health crisis, lost family discovered.....kind of a kitchen sink approach). But, I loved the descriptions of Turtle Island and of the wildlife there, especially the sea turtles. It was enough to push the rating up a notch. The narrator has a lovely voice and pretty accent, but not much emotion.

Definitely a first novel

This isn’t a book I could read quickly and it involved several stops and starts to finish. I almost gave up, but I’m glad I didn’t. The narration was good, but I wasn’t able to lose her voice in the story and thus I couldn’t give her performance more than 4 stars. This will teach you a lot, but it comes with tears. 4.5 stars

Very moving and informative
