About this listen
They may be famous, but they’re no less human - the quirks, the drama, and the not so obvious side of baseball.
Even in a sport as legendary as baseball, players are no exception to the roller-coaster ride of life.
Every single person has their own tale of failure, courage, and success, no matter how big or small - it’s when you put them together that you unearth the ultimate underdog story.
In A Game of Extremes, you will discover 25 stories of the most exceptional baseball players to this day, revealing a more transparent look at the lives of these famous athletes:
- 10 tons of guacamole and a samurai sword, please: the player who was more known for his quirks than his skill - but no less talented than the rest
- The beloved pitcher who was the inspiration behind both a movie character and an April Fools' joke that duped the nation
- The trickster who “stole” first base, forever leaving his mark with the new official rule that followed
- One player’s six wise rules for staying young and achieving lifelong success - all compiled through experience
- Baseball on LSD: how one pitcher navigated an entire game high, and even threw a no-hitter
- The player with all odds against him - think a birthday of Friday the 13th and a death date of April Fools' Day - and how he rose to hold a place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame
- And much more
Don’t let the game fool you - there’s more to baseball than meets the eye.

Story
New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski is back with a masterful ode to the game: a countdown of 50 of the most memorable moments in baseball’s history, to make you fall in love with the sport all over again. Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays’s catch, Babe Ruth’s called shot, and Kirk Gibson’s limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters.

Led by the indomitable Keith Hernandez and the young dynamic duo of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, along with the gallant Scum Bunch, the Amazin's left a wide trail of wreckage in their wake-hotel rooms, charter planes, a bar in Houston, and most famously Bill Buckner and the hated Boston Red Sox.

Story
The Soul of Baseball is as much the story of Buck O'Neil as it is the story of baseball. Driven by a relentless optimism and his two great passions - for America's pastime and for jazz, America's music - O'Neil played solely for love. In an era when greedy, steroid-enhanced athletes have come to characterize professional ball, Posnanski offers a salve for the damaged spirit: the uplifting life lessons of a truly extraordinary man who never missed an opportunity to enjoy and love life.

Story
Pete Rose was a legend on the field. As baseball’s hit king, he shattered records that were thought to be unbreakable. And during the 1970s, he was the leader of the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds team that dominated the game. But he’s also the greatest player who may never enter the Hall of Fame because of his lifetime ban from the sport. Perhaps no other ballplayer’s story is so representative of the triumphs and tragedies of our national pastime.

Story
In 1973, baseball was in crisis. The first strike in pro sports had soured fans, American League attendance had fallen, and America's team—the Yankees—had lost more games and money than ever. Yet that season, five of the game's greatest figures rescued the national pastime. Hank Aaron riveted the nation with his pursuit of Babe Ruth's landmark home run record in the face of racist threats. George Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees at a bargain basement price and began buying back their faded glory.

The World Series is the most enduring showcase in American team sports. It’s the place where legends are made, where celebration and devastation can hinge on a fly ball off a foul pole or a grounder beneath a first baseman’s glove. And there’s no one better to bring this rich history to life than New York Times national baseball columnist Tyler Kepner, whose bestselling book about pitching, K, was lauded as “Michelangelo explaining the brush strokes on the Sistine Chapel” by Newsday.

A journalist who many iconic athletes have trusted to tell their stories (of both triumph and disgrace), Jim has had unprecedented access to the people, places, and extraordinary events in the world of sports. Asking tough but fair questions, he has broken numerous stories, and landed squarely in the middle of others, from the Ben Johnson and Barry Bonds steroid scandals, to Michael Jordan’s surprise retirement, to the off-the-court Kobe/Shaq feud which led to their on-the-court break up, to being part of the live broadcast for 22 Super Bowls.

Story
Packed with "compelling inside stories" (Chicago Tribune), Teammate is the inspiring memoir from "Grandpa Rossy", the veteran catcher who became the heart and soul of the 2016 Chicago Cubs championship team and was named manager in 2019. In 2016 the Cubs snapped a 108-year curse, winning the World Series in a history-making, seven-game series against the Cleveland Indians. Of the many storylines to Chicago's fairytale season, one stood out: The late-career renaissance of David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who had played back-up for 13 of his 15 pro seasons.

Few names in the history of baseball evoke the excellence and dynamism that Rickey Henderson’s does. He holds the record for the most stolen bases in a single game, and he’s scored more runs than any player ever. “If you cut Rickey Henderson in half, you’d have two Hall of Famers,” the baseball historian Bill James once said. But perhaps even more than his prowess on the field, Rickey Henderson’s is a story of Oakland, California, the town that gave rise to so many legendary athletes like him.

A Baseball Lover's Dream
This book is like a baseballer's bible - 25 uniquely titled stories that inform, educate and inspire, not just baseball players but also those who have an interest in the game. The stories are told in a uniquely interesting way that holds the interest of the listener. It is creative, anticipative and engaging, and at times I could picture the game just by listening to the book.
As someone who is new to baseball, I feel far more empowered about the game, after listening to the audio.

Pretty cool, felt casual
This had some good stories. Even for myself. I don’t follow baseball but I always love how sports creates stories of perseverance, team work, and crossover of life values. It’s not just a sport game. This was a relaxing story to me but others that know baseball might get more excited because they have prior knowledge of certain players and coaches.
