About this listen

A Grown Up Kind of Pretty is a powerful saga of three generations of women, plagued by hardships and torn by a devastating secret, yet inextricably joined by the bonds of family.

Fifteen-year-old Mosey Slocumb - spirited, sassy, and on the cusp of womanhood - is shaken when a small grave is unearthed in the backyard, and determined to figure out why it's there. Liza, her stroke-ravaged mother, is haunted by choices she made as a teenager. But it is Jenny, Mosey's strong and big-hearted grandmother, whose maternal love braids together the strands of the women's shared past - and who will stop at nothing to defend their future.

"Highly immersive... a compelling page turner." (Publishers Weekly)

Normaly when I see an audio book narrated by the author I view it with trepidation. Sometimes they are good, but most times not so much. However, this author brings her characters to life with her narration. Wish she would narrate books witten by other authors. This was a very good story also.

Great Narration by the Author

If you could sum up A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty in three words, what would they be?

Southern, Moving, Women

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty?

The moment the box was found.

Which character – as performed by Joshilyn Jackson – was your favorite?

Mosey was my favorite. I felt for her the most.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but there is never time for that.

Who are you, really?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Joshilyn Jackson weaves an amazing story. Her characters are all ones we can relate too. This story is told from the perspective of 3 different characters and each one is so true to life! I bought this book to listen to on my commute, but got so hooked on the story and plot, I ended up listening to the entire second half of the book in one weekend!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Big. She has a fiesty screw-you attitude and loves her girls.

What about Joshilyn Jackson’s performance did you like?

Since she wrote the book and narrated it, I feel like I am truly hearing as she meant it to be heard.

Amazing story telling

Absolutely lovely story that will touch the hearts of many women, particularly those brought up in female-only households. At times the story had me in shock and at other times it had me crying and at other times I was laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of the predicament of their lives!

The criticism I have is with the performance. The story is told by each of the three women, all different ages. Because the narrator's voice sounds so young, I would often forget that "Big" was telling her story during a section and have to rewind it to make sure I got the characters correct.

Excellent story but narration is "young" sounding

I loved this book! Ms Jackson writes with a genuine understanding of the southern culture . I recommended her book, God In Alabama, to my book club. They really enjoyed it, especially the character development.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I can't comment on any aspect of the actual story, as I didn't manage to get through more than five minutes of the book because Joshilyn Jackson's voice is absolutely awful.

Grating Voice Ruins Story

This book was moving, it kept my attention and didn't lull me out like some do. I love Joshilyn though, she has not failed me yet and the deep family bonds and ability to hear how three generations of women learn the same lessons is beautiful and thoughtful.

Another great by Joshilyn

l loved the narration. It definitely added to the atmosphere of life in lower middle class small town Arkansas that feels so real in this novel. 3 generations of women face the difficulties of early, out of wedlock pregnancies, social consequences and finally love in shaping their lives.
