About this listen
Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Today the subcontinent contains 20 percent of the world's population and is a thriving center for global business, making this region one of most significant economic powerhouses in the world.
Go inside this thrilling story with A History of India, a breathtaking survey of South Asia from its earliest societies along the Indus and Ganges rivers through the modern challenges of the 21st century. These 36 sweeping lectures enable you to understand the epic scope of the subcontinent's history. Perhaps the most important facet of this history is how diverse the region truly is. Roughly the size of continental Europe, India - along with its neighbors, Pakistan and Bangladesh - contains a myriad of ethnic groups, socioeconomic classes, religions, and cultural mores.
In this wide-ranging investigation, you'll:
- Meet the many religious communities that have coexisted in India, including Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians
- Delve into the legacies of the Mauryan Empire, the Mughal Empire, and British colonialism - three of the few governments that ever unified the subcontinent
- Witness the fight for independence from European powers and the partition of the region into the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in the 20th century
- Consider the challenges and opportunities faced by this area today, from expanding urbanization to the vast need for energy sources to the ongoing heated debates about national identity
Professor Fisher, who has traveled and taught in South Asia for decades, reveals this complex narrative with skill and compelling insights.

What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Story
Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Powerful women have shaped laws, led rebellions, and played key roles in dynastic struggles. Some were caught up in forces beyond their control, while others manipulated and murdered their way to the top. However, unearthing their stories from the historical record has been a challenge, with the ordinary difficulties of preserving information across the generations increased by centuries of historical bias and gendered expectations.

In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
India has a rich history covering thousands of years, civilizations, the rise of religions and empires, British rule, revolution, independence, and much more. In this book, we explore the magnificent history of India, from its ancient origins to its renaissance and concluding with its independence as a free nation. While there are many books that explore India’s unique history, few are enjoyable. Most books are hopelessly dry, academic, and downright difficult to follow. This concise history will respect your time by getting right to the point and giving you what you came to learn.

The narrative focuses on the imaginative and institutional structures that have successfully sustained and transformed India, first under British colonial rule and then, after 1947, as an independent country. Woven into the larger political narrative is an account of India's social and economic development and its rich cultural life. The final chapter charts the dramatic developments of the last 20 years, from 1990 through to the Congress electoral victory of 2009, and the rise of the Indian high-tech industry in a country still troubled by poverty and political unrest.

Between roughly 500 BCE to the turn of the millennium, a modest city-state developed an innovative system of government and expanded into far-flung territories across Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. Acceptable overview of South Asian history
It was always going to be an uphill battle to condense 3 centuries of civilization to 18 hours. The lectures do an okay job as a general history survey. The pros are the coverage of Mohenjo Daro, Harappa and the migrations bringing Vedic culture to South Asia, as well as the overview of post Mughal South Asia. What's lacking is the political dynamics of the period in-between. There was too much emphasis on theology for a history class in my opinion. That part could have been condensed for a more fascinating discussion on mahajanapas, Greek kingdoms, etc.

Expanding my view of world history
With a typical American education my knowledge of the history of India was limited so this course helped me to expand my perspective. As with most of the Great Courses, this was very well produced and informative. As is sometimes the case I would have preferred it were a bit shorter - maybe 24 lectures instead of 36, but I am glad that I powered through it.

very comprehensive
The subject matter of this course was very interesting and enlightening. I learned a lot from listening to the entire course, however, the narrator giving the lectures was the worst I have ever heard. He constantly hesitated, stopped at the wrong places in the middle of sentences and seem totally unprepared to give an oral lecture . It was disconcerting to have to listen to him and it's hard for me to believe that he was the learned person who wrote this course. He is certainly not good at lecturing to the point where it almost made the course unenjoyable.

Indian History - incomplete, needs broader view.
This book did not cover great personalities and great traditions of India. Like Yoga and meditation developed in India is well respected all over world but did not appear in this book. Great persons including Nobel laurets in various fields didn't have mention. Persons like Dr. C V Raman, Hargobindd Khorana, Rabindranatdh Tagore and others. ISRO done such a great job, now India is a fourth nation in the world to send rocket to Mars.
Greats persons like Aryabhatta who invented Zero not even mentioned.
Dr. Abdul Kalam who became the president of India in spite of being from minority community is not mentioned, this shows how well they get respect in India. President is the highest position in India.
Hours together discussed glorified history of mogul and British rule.
Much better things than Tajmahal with so much development work happening in India Better photograph should have been selected.
I hope in next revision author will take these points into consideration.
