About this listen

The 14th novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times best-selling Toby Daye urban fantasy series

When October is informed that Simon Torquill - legally her father, due to Faerie's archaic marriage traditions - must be invited to her wedding or risk the ceremony throwing the Kingdom in the Mists into political turmoil, she finds herself setting out on a quest she was not yet prepared to undertake for the sake of her future...and the man who represents her family's past.

What a ride!

This series always manages to surprise and delight me. This one is no different. A seemingly random piece of fae etiquette sends the MC off on another adventure...with a huge payoff at the end. I am so excited to see how this book affects things going forward.

Wow 😲

Wow 😲 this series just gets better and better. How is this even possible? I mean, fourteen books is no easy feat and the story is just as engaging and beguiling and wondrous as book one. Bring on book 15!

Brilliant addition to Toby’s story

I love it. Read the other books first - literally every relationship/conversation/interaction is a spoiler for earlier books. I’m so happy to see the growth in these characters and the resolution of several major points. Enjoy it! I feel like the next book will have a more nights and silences ending while this fits more with unkindest tide

A brilliant addition to the series!

Loved this! Great story and narration. Seanan is magic with world building, plot twists, and character development. Mary Robinette Kowal adds her own magic with her voice acting and narration.

Amazingly good for book 14

I think this is my least favorite of the October series so far, and it’s still pretty darn good. This is the most books I’ve ever read in a series and I can’t say that I’m not looking forward to reading book 15. If you liked the previous 13 books, I think you’ll like this one. It’s not materially different.

But that may also be the deep weakness of this book. It’s not materially different from the previous 13 books. It feels a bit like a really good clip episode of a TV show. Everything you love is there but it’s stretched a bit past its intended use. It’s fun but something new needs to happen now.

Said new thing may have been set up. But it’s not actually in this book, maybe next one.

So, all in all, amazingly good for book 14. But it is the 14th book and the age is starting to show just a little.

Better than the last, but missing novella

After The Unkindest Tide, I considered breaking up with this series, but I love the world so much that I had to give this one a listen and I'm glad I did. Overall it's one of the most satisfying in the series and I'm curious to see what happens next.
My only big complaint is that the novella is once again not part of the audiobook. Most, if not all, of the books in this series have a novella in the print versions. These novellas have storylines that are pertinent to the series overall, but so far only The Unkindest Tide includes it in the audiobook. I was hoping this was going to happen going forward, but apparently that was a one-time thing. It's frustrating to not get all of the content included in the print versions.

Good, but somwhat underwhelming.

Both The Unkindest Tide and A Killing Frost have conclusions to plot points that have been in the making sense the very beginning. Which is awesome, however, the conclusions are somewhat anticlimactic. Don't get me wrong I like both books, but considering how long we were waiting for them to happen i was kinda expecting something a bit more epic. I mean it took Toby about two seconds to find a character, most of which was just sitting around waiting for them to walk down some stairs. Not to mention that she wasn't even looking for them in the first place. I don't know... it just kind of feels like that Seanan is done with these books and she is trying to tie up all the loose ends as quickly as possible. I might be wrong, probably am, but it's how i feel right now. We will have to wait until the next book, I guess, to see if i am right or wrong.
