About this listen

Remember that old line about how the only way out of the organization is in a pine box?

Well, Rue Hollis spent 10 years thinking she had escaped the Black Hat Bureau, no coffin required.

Then her former partner had to go and shatter the illusion by showing up on her doorstep with grim tidings. As much as Rue wants to kick him to the curb, she agrees to hear him out for old times' sake, and what he says chills her to the bone.

The Silver Stag was the most notorious paranormal serial killer in modern history, and Rue brought him down. Now a copycat has picked up where the Stag left off, and the Bureau wants her on the case. She beat the Stag once. They think she can do it again. But they don't know she's given up black magic, and she's not about to tell them. White witches are prey, and Rue is the hunter, not the hunted. Always.

But can she take down the protege of the man who almost beat her at her black witch best?

If she wants to keep her new town, her new home, her new life, then she has no choice but to find out.

Contains mature themes.

Like a FBI murder mystery with magic

This book's really enjoyable. The narrator is good. The storyline is strong. The writing is solid. I'll have to add this author to my list of favorites

Fun

What a fun story for anyone. This book is full of wit and sass. The story itself perfection. The narration just sucks you in and makes you never want it to end.

One of my favorite series

This series is one of my all time favorites. I love how Hailey provides slower relationship progressions and how the women match their partners in sexual and/or relationship experiences or more experienced yet still equals (this series, The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy, and the Potentate of Atlanta). I was getting sick of paranormal romance books featuring the experienced man with the (near) virginal woman, but this strays in the best of ways.

I love Stephanie Richardson as narrator for the most part (a couple cringy portions, but the rest more than make up for it) and for most of the characters (her voice for Rue, Colby & Clay is wonderful).

A new, fun story!

Rue Hollis is a former black witch hiding out from the Black Hat Bureau. Her former place of employment though, they’re in desperate need of her skills.

She’s a white witch with a secret. One that could not only put her in danger but end the new, normal life she has. When her old partner shows up, asking for help, with a folder of info and no idea how to start. This case is growing faster than Black Hat can move.

When the lines are drawn, the bodies are stacked up—things get hairy quickly. Rue has a choice to make; one that is going to put them all in danger but at this point in the case, it’s unavoidable.

Only the best will come out on top… good thing Rue knows her stuff—she’s going to need every advantage she has up her sleeve.

Didn't expect to like it, but I did!

As a rule, I don't read books like this. When all my co-workers were enjoying the Charlaine Harris books, I discovered that page one made me gag and I never gave them another chance. Somehow, I ended up getting both the Kindle and Audible versions of this title and, what the heck, I started listening. Now I've listened to four and read the fifth and I love them! The writing is excellent (I don't find myself correcting sentences in my mind), the characters are fleshed out and believable, the narrator does a great job, there's a nice, sexy tension between two of the main characters but that's not the only tension between characters at all, and the storyline is expertly developed. also, the author has created this amazing magical world that'ass easy to navigate and understand. I wish there was an Audible version of book five, but I guess you can't have it all. Maybe I'll try another of Hailey Edwards' books. 💕

Not what you would expect

Hailey is a wonderful, imaginative writer! In this book, her cheekiness really shines through the main character, Rou! I typically do not read stories surrounding witch characters, no specific reason, just not drawn to them. I was very surprises when Black hat didn't fall into the typical witchy troupes and had a character that was trying to change and her inner struggles - along with her not-familiar in a fast paced story! Vivid descriptions will pull you in but the characters will keep you reading...
