About this listen

A lush, sweeping queer historical romance from the best-selling author of Boyfriend Material—perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Evie Dunmore and Lisa Kleypas!

When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo, she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.

Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.

Acceptance

I've enjoyed Alexis Hall's writing regardless of the novel, but until this story, everything I've read has been quite lighthearted. A Lady for a Duke dabbles with much heavier themes, like PTSD and living in a body, which doesn't match your own gender. It is still, first and foremost, a happy story about love and acceptance.

It's the acceptance that I enjoyed the most. There is so much love and acceptance between all of the main characters, and that helps them sort out the logistical problems of their relationships. In the modern world where all kinds of phobias are given way too much space, reading this book was refreshing.

A quick praise for the narration, as well. The main focus of this book is on Viola, and for that, the choice of narrator was spot on.

terrible

This is a terrible book. the characters are flat and predictable. The main character is so unlikable wallowing in her own self-pity. the story is repetitive and I don't recommend it.
