About this listen

Sam Becker loves—or, okay, likes—his job. Sure, managing a bed-and-bath retailer isn't exactly glamorous, but it's good work, and he gets on well with the band of misfits who keep the store running. He could see himself being content here for the long haul. Too bad, then, that the owner is an infuriating git.

Jonathan Forest should never have hired Sam. It was a sentimental decision, and Jonathan didn't get where he is by following his heart. Determined to set things right, Jonathan orders Sam down to London for a difficult talk…only for a panicking Sam to trip, bump his head, and maybe accidentally imply he doesn't remember anything?

Faking amnesia seemed like a good idea when Sam was afraid he was getting sacked, but now he has to deal with the reality of Jonathan's guilt—as well as the unsettling fact that his surly boss might have a softer side to him. There's an unexpected freedom in getting a second shot at a first impression…but as Sam and Jonathan grow closer, can Sam really bring himself to tell the truth, or will their future be built entirely on one impulsive lie?

Stellar performance by Will Watt

Quirky story and some truly laugh out loud moments, but voice actor Will Watt kills!

Great story. Great narration.

Sigh. I just feel better after a trip inside an Alexis Hall story. This one was lovely. The characters are relatable on so many different levels. The plot is so creative. The unbelievable parts of the story become very believable with every chapter. I laughed. I cried. I didn't want the story to end, but the ending made me really happy. If that wasn't enough then allow me to gush about the wonderful narrator, Will Watt, who does an amazing job of narrating a large cast of characters with distinct voices for each character. So yeah, definitely a must read and a wonderful reread.

The story was fun and the narrator made had me stifling my laughter on planes, on the couch and alone in my room. What a fun and tender read. I really enjoyed this.

Another win for Alexis Hall

After coming off a high listening to the complete Spires series and then Boyfriend/Husband Material I just couldn't let the writing of Alexis Hall go.
This book is not the same as the above mentioned. The writing is, but it's so different, and I am having a hard time trying to describe why. In my mind it shouldn't work but it does. Like the repetitive sayings of the bed and bathroom products. The first couple times I was the WTF. That is strange but then it wasn't.
I really enjoyed the story of Sam and Johnathan. Their dynamics together, their bickering, their eventual friendship, their eventual like of each other and in the end their love of each other. I wasn't sure what was going to happen after the Christmas party fiasco (seriously Brian should have been fired from the get go) and then at the cemetery. Between the party and the cemetery I may have cried. I just really like how they Sam and Johnathan completed each other.
Johnathan's family is a hoot. They reminded me of watching a British Sitcom. Keeping Up With Appearances comes to mind. So many other good ones too.
The story is basic but full of such complete chaos and content.
Love is Love and you never know where you're going to find it.
Another win for Alexis Hall.
Another great narration from Will Watt.

Alexis' Best Material World Book!!!

I absolutely love this book! At first I was afraid when I heard the hero was going to be Jonathan but surprisingly this is my fav of the world to date! Absolutely phenomenal read with Alexis' characteristic humor and heroes to adore. I cannot wait for the next book in this world!!!

You won’t forget this story.

Beautifully performed. Brilliantly written. Will Watt is a supremely talented narrator, and he brings Alexis Hall’s words come to life in the most wonderful ways.

GREAT Writing

The story was was very entertaining, however, the narrator’s take on the protagonist’s accent in the first few chapters sounded like someone with a really bad cold trying to hack up some phlegm stuck hard and deep. It took me several times trying to get past that but I didn’t give up because it’s Alexis Hall, whose writing I love. So several attempts later, I just touched it out and after a few I was fine and wound up listening nonstop all in one day. It was delightful! If you get stuck on the one particular accent as I did in the first chapters, don’t let that hinder you. It’s well worth the listen and the strange accent softens up so it’s not so distracting.
Disclaimer: I am NOT from the UK, so it is very possible that it’s simply an accent I’ve not heard much or at all and therefore a just not familiar with it.
