About this listen

Letitia holds nothing more dear than the papers that prove she is no longer a slave. They may not cause white folks to treat her like a human being, but at least they show she is free. She trusts in those words she cannot read - as she is beginning to trust in Davey Carson, an Irish immigrant cattleman who wants her to come west with him. Nancy Hawkins is loathe to leave her settled life for the treacherous journey by wagon train, but she is so deeply in love with her husband that she knows she will follow him anywhere - even when the trek exacts a terrible cost. Betsy is a Kalapuya Indian, the last remnant of a once proud tribe in the Willamette Valley in Oregon territory. She spends her time trying to impart the wisdom and ways of her people to her grandson. But she will soon have another person to care for. As season turns to season, suspicion turns to friendship, and fear turns to courage, three spirited women will discover what it means to be truly free in a land that makes promises it cannot fulfill.

This multilayered story from best-selling author Jane Kirkpatrick will grip listeners' hearts and minds as they travel with Letitia on the dusty and dangerous Oregon Trail into the boundless American West.

Amazing and inspiring true story

I loved this book so much I cannot bring myself to begin another book because nothing else will measure up. I was drawn in from page one and was inspired and entertained to the very end. I have to admit that stories of pioneers heading west are my favorite, especially ifntheybare based on a true story, which this one is. It's a story of true friendship and courage

A Light In the Wilderness

This was such a unique and well told story! As a fan of historical based literature this did not disappoint! It remained emotionally connected to the struggle of acceptance or hatred in equal measure the color, gender and race of a person. The subtle inclusion of the faith in God that was relied upon- I think added to the novel. Great narration!!

Wonderful story!

Frustrated w/ Davey so many times, but LOVED Letitia’s strength & persistence! Outstanding narrator, too! Well worth the credit.

Courage

The truth of life in this time period and how sad some people still judge others by skin color. This was a very moving story of courage, love, and inspiration.

Amazing book. One of her best.

Invokes a whole range of emotions….Tears, anger, lessons in grace and gratitude, kindness of strangers that become friends vs flagrant evil of despicable, racists…both women and men.
Be prepared to not stop reading/listening..

Wow! I am HOOKED!

This such an amazing book, with great, rich history of resistant women making it the best they can in a Wild Western country! I love the pioneers time period but this book is the best one I've read. I am a woc in the west so it's nice to know some origins!

Good historical fiction

I loved that this was historical fiction—the relationships and dialogue make the historical realities come alive. It was so easy to care for the main character. Appreciated the themes of power, patriarchy, slavery and genocide, through all of the relationships.
