About this listen

In the final book of the series that began with The Darling Buds of May, the fun-loving Pop Larkin finds himself confined to a bed following a mild heart attack - caused by a little too much of what he fancied. Ma battles with the doctors as she attempts to find an adequate cure, but it turns out that a seductive nurse is all he needs. Pa's spirits truly recover themselves when he is forced to defend his home from the ministry's railway plans. This concludes the tales of H. E. Bates' Larkin family - a winsome gallery of characters who live as many of us would like to live, 'if only we had the guts and nerve to flout the conventions'.

Having completed the whole series of books, I feel rather sad that it has come to an end. I'll just have to read again.

Delightful

This is not the happy upbeat story of the other episodes. In this episode, we deal with Sidney's poor health and aging issues. lots of dark humor. It is a good book but you have to remember that the author wrote this sometime after the other books in his old age.

Different Tone

Brilliantly crafted series of stories about a family we all wish could be our friends for life. This final chapter is the Jewel in the Crown of Bates' masterpiece saga of true human love and simple pleasures..
