About this listen

Audie Award, History/Biography, 2016

This acclaimed portrait of heroism and ingenuity captures a watershed moment in human history. The astronauts themselves have called it the definitive account of their missions. On the night of July 20, 1969, our world changed forever when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Based on in-depth interviews with 23 of the 24 moon voyagers, as well as those who struggled to get the program moving, A Man on the Moon conveys every aspect of the Apollo missions with breathtaking immediacy and stunning detail.

More interesting than expected

I bought this because i wanted a change from World War 1 or 2, or badly written novels. I'm old enough to remember watching the Apollo 11 landing ( we here in Canada were as interested as the rest of the world) but like most others, my knowledge of the Space Program went no further than watching the Tom Hanks Apollo 13 movie. I was surprised with how ( for the most part) engaging it was. I agree it was written for listeners such as myself ( not too scientific or technical) and I quite liked learning about the astronauts as people, their fears, courage, determination, families. Some parts near the end dragged ( the discussion of geology and collection of samples from the moon) but overall......worth a listen

Magnificent on the most spectacular adventure of the human race

The story is epic and expertly written by the author. Some technical details, yet more of the human factor - stories and anecdotes that bring the men of the Apollo program to life.

Author employs a somewhat too dramatic reading style that at times is completely at odds with the written material. Still, his style is decent enough and does not subtract too much from the experience.

Overall a wonderful audiobook that I can highly recommend to those curious about the manned missions to the moon, or to anyone with an interest in magnificent tales of courage, ingenuity and exploration.

A great story, well told.

I hope this is not the nadir of American ability, imagination, talent and drive. But if it is, what a way to go out. Great people doing great things and succeeding for all the world to see and feel. Hat's off to Mr Chaikin for his effort and storytelling ability. And thanks also to Mr Pinchot for his fine work.

An inspirational story well told.

The author does a good job telling the story of each astronaut on each mission. I learned quite a bit.

Awe inspiring and incredible.

I've always loved space and science. But you don't have to like either to enjoy this book. At first I was daughted by the 23 hour play time, but sitting here now after it all Im sad that there isn't more.

It really is such a eye opening event in human history, and I couldn't imagine a better way to share how I feel about astronomy and space flight then with this book.

Mezmerizing!

This narrative helped me to recapture the excitement I felt as a twelve year old boy, glued to the screen of our black and white TV, as my family and I watched Neal Armstrong take that first step on another world. Yet this was also a fascinating rediscovery for me, as the details of that and subsequent lunar missions were rolled out in vivid detail. It was as if Apollo was happening again, for the first time, and I was a close observer, and even a participant. I am grateful to the author for his exhaustive research and skilled story telling, and to the narrator, whose sensitive reading helped to convey an almost childlike wonder and excitement about space exploration, both past and future. Stunning achievement

This book fulfilled all my dreams of reliving the Apollo missions . The adventures of space travel are recounted in detail but the story moves forward with energy and anticipation. The astronauts are portrayed as distinct individuals who all strive for the same goals for different reasons. The narration is outstanding, one of the best I’ve heard yet on Audible, with great pacing, clarity, and drama. I enjoyed this listen tremendously and recommend it to anyone Inter in the titanic achievement of the Apollo space flights.

Fantastic and detailed

What a great story. It dives deeply into the history of the Apollo missions that brought 12 very lucky men to the moon. My only criticism is the narrator. For my taste anyways, he's too monotone and dd not portray the emotions that would have been felt while reading
