Publisher's summary

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the 20th century's greatest feat - landing humans on another world.

Collaborating with NBC's veteran space reporter Jay Barbree, Shepard, and Slayton narrate, in gripping detail, the story of America's space exploration from the time of Shepard's first flight until he and 11 others had walked on the moon.

where were you when it happened?

Awesome review of the Moon program from both the US and USSR history. Space nerds will love it.

Enlightening

A must for space history folks. I liked the parallel but not exactly the same story of The Right Stuff. Final chapter is new information about Obama and his killing of NASA

Great book about NASA and the coming of age.

Loved learning more from someone that was directly involved with the program. I never knew that Obama killed NASA, makes it even clearer now of all of the other things that crook did!!

It felt like I was there!

Really well written, and read almost like a narrative. Was super fascinating. A must read for anyone trying to build something within an organization.

Excellent!

Great detail but not beyond the interest of space fans. I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys the history of space flight and how we strived to get to the moon.

Enjoyable but falls short of Chaikin

Any history of the Apollo program has to be measured against Chaikin’s “A Man on the Moon,” but if you’re like me and you devour everything you can on the subject, this does not disappoint as long as you remember this is the Slayton/Shepard story, not Apollo per se.

As such, it feels like the twin climaxes of the book are Apollo 14 and the Apollo-Soyuz missions those two men were involved with, and it’s a bit odd that barely any time is spent on Apollo 15-17 given how much time is spent on everything that led up to 14.

Grove gets some pronunciations wrong (Apollo 13’s CMP rendered as Jack “Swaggart” instead of Swigert being the most glaring example) but he gets the job done.

Despite its shortcomings I can recommend it by saying that I always looked forward to picking the story back up on my next car ride.

Two Great Men Who Witnessed And Made History

This is a detailed and personal history of two of the original 7 Mercury astronauts. Alan Sheppard and Deke Slaton relate their own memories of the US Space Program from the 1960s to the 1980s, the dreams, drama, and disappointments; the history, humor, and horrors; their competition and both of their triumphant comebacks. Above all, it highlights a 20+ year friendship between two American heroes.
