About this listen

Join three bestselling regency romance authors, Heidi Ashworth, Annette Lyon, and Michele Paige Holmes, for three new regency romance novellas in A Midwinter Ball.

Much Ado About Dancing by Heidi Ashworth. Two years have passed since Lord Northrup declared his intentions for Miss Analisa Lloyd-Jones and forbade any other man to court her. Angry at the neglect, Analisa stopped reading his letters, never even breaking the seals. Tired of waiting, Analisa joins the house party at Mrs. Smith's famous country home, determined to find a beau. When Lord Northrup unexpectedly joins the party, Analisa discovers she is no longer repulsed by the man who first laid claim to her hand.

Sweeter Than Any Dream by Annette Lyon. Olivia Wallington is firmly established as a spinster, but that doesn't stop her from dreaming about the perfect man. Ever since her father's death, Olivia has been forced into seclusion by her mother. When her brother and his wife come for a visit, they discover the extent to which she lives under their mother's thumb. With their help, Olivia sneaks out to attend a local ball, where she meets Edward Blakemoore. For a few divine moments, all of her dreams seem possible. But even someone like Mr. Blakemoore would be hard pressed to get past Mrs. Wallington's fortress of protection - or past Olivia's pride.

An Invitation to Dance by Michele Paige Holmes. Lady Ella has been isolated on her father's estate since her mother's death as her father travels the world. When Alex Darling arrives with a letter from her long-dead fiancé, and a demand that she travel to London for a series of engagements, Ella thinks her father instigated the strange demands and agrees. In London, she discovers the truth behind her fiancé's death, and that new love might be possible in the arms of the most unexpected man.

Sweet stories

Clean, sweet stories. Nice enjoyable length. Third one by Michele Paige Holmes was my favorite.

Disappointed with endings

Spoiler alerts! In Sweeter Than Any Dream I couldn’t wait to hear the responses of Olivia’s mother and Aunt to Edward’s proposal and then…. nothing.
In An Invitation To Dance I couldn’t wait to hear of Ella’s reunion with her Papa. Then after Alex talks to him at the ball and then dances with Ella, again… nothing Otherwise I would absolutely love these stories. Surely I’m not the only one that would have loved more of the endings.

I liked

The third story a lot, the first one not at all and the second one a little. The narrator was really good though.

Two Very Good, One Darling

A Midwinter Ball by Heidi Ashworth, Annette Lyon, and Michele Paige Holmes, brings us three new regency romance novellas. All three are well written and enjoyable. Three instead of Four in one volume worked better for me. The plots had time to come to a conclusion and to a believable ending. With them all happening in a similar season it sets the tone. I especially enjoyed AN INVITATION TO DANCE by Michele Paige Holmes. Lady Ella makes an excellent Cinderella. Her mother’s death leaves her alone and her father abandons her. Alex Darling charms the reader just as he does Ella. When he arrives with a letter from her long-dead fiancé, she thinks it a trick from her father. Then Darling takes her to London to find a husband. The plot works because of Darling’s character. PG13 wonderful!

Lovely winter romances

Of the three stories, MUCH ADO ABOUT DANCING by Heidi Ashworth, SWEETER THAN ANY DREAM by Annette Lyon, and AN INVITATION TO DANCE by Michele Paige Holmes, I'm really torn as to which I liked the best. The first story didn't resonate very well with me, but the last two were delightful stories. I loved the characters and sympathized with them. DREAM had a case of insta-love, but I enjoyed the characters anyway and the ending was sweet. Perhaps it was the INVITATION, then, that wins. It's ending was swoon-worthy.

4 1/2 stars

I listened to the audiobook, and the Sarah Zimmerman was wonderful!

Okay book and poor narration..

MUCH ADO ABOUT DANCING by HEIDI ASHWORTH
This was rather silly! Analisa complained several times that she was an spinster and she should forget about a proposal at her age. Really? She was going to be twenty “come the fall.” And I don’t like the heroine choosing between two different men and, of course, she chooses the wrong one before she knows she’s wrong. I’m glad this was only a novella or I wouldn’t have finished it. 2 Stars

SWEETER THAN ANY DREAM by ANNETTE LYON
Kinda cute but a little mushy. And her mother and aunt, jeez I don’t even want to talk about those two witches. I think a better ending would have been Olivia and Edward walking out of the house and not giving a crap what her mother had to say about that, instead of her and Edward agreeing that they would need a lifetime to read all the poetry they both liked. But Olivia never grew a backbone until the end of the book so I can see why they didn’t just leave. 2 stars

AN INVITATION TO DANCE by MICHELE PAIGE HOLMES
A sweet read. Ella went to London for a “season” but that was the last place she wanted to be. She’d have rather be back in the country riding her horse. Alex was falling in love with her but because of a wound his arm was no use to him anymore and didn’t want her, or anyone, pitying him. Needless to say, Ella didn’t care about that arm, she just wanted him. 3 stars

As to the narration: I keep trying to listen to Sarah Zimmerman but she’s absolutely terrible. Oh, yeah, she does a woman’s voice fine. Why wouldn’t she? But, for Pete’s sake, at least try to do a man’s voice. I still have another set of these books that she narrates and I don’t know if I can stand it. I’m sure glad there’s no sex in these stories or it would sound like 2 women instead of a man and woman.
