Publisher's summary

After a personal tragedy upends his world, American-born artist Chris travels to his mother’s homeland in the Caribbean hoping to find some peace and tranquility. He plans to spend his time painting in solitude and coming to terms with his recent loss and his fractured relationship with his father. Instead, he discovers a new extended and complicated “family”, with their own startling stories, including a love triangle. The people he meets help him to heal, even as he supports them in unexpected ways, through his art.

Told from different points of view, this is a compelling novel about unlikely love, friendship, and community, with several surprises along the way. The story takes place against the backdrop of rural Jamaica, New York City, and Paris, France.

A quiet read

Love the universal theme of aunties. What do we do without them. The characters sparkle with a beautiful inside glow.

relaxing and inspiring

I loved the narration and the meandering quality of the writing. The book felt like a long walk in a garden. Lots of art, flowers, food, family, and culture with just a sprinkle of drama. Brilliantly subtle. Love it.

Great story!

Interestingly and exact descriptions of locations of Jamaica, brooklyn and Paris. Too short.. didn’t want the story to end!

A Beautiful Diasporic Piece

A book characteristic of Caribbean Postcolonial literature, with character perspectives written from the greater diaspora of their Jamaican homeland. This book takes a look at both blood and chosen family, bonds that cross oceans, loss and grief, and the bittersweet changes that occur in the middle and later stages of life.

OK but…..

Love the performer’s accents. I have Jamaican friends.
Story was a bit weird, too short & ended abruptly but still OK.

Lovely, lighthearted book

This is a lovely lighthearted book. Just enough drama to be interesting. Not enough to make you feel down.

So Good!

So good. I love Robine Miles and liked the book details. I enjoyed everything! Every chapter, every word. I felt like I knew each character. Ms Pretty was so real to me. I was sweating thinking about Ms Pretty's walking around.

Treat yourself to this beautiful melodic narration.

Abrupt ending

The story progressed well but at the very end it felt very rushed. The ending leaves a lot to be desired.

A cultural lesson

Loved and hated it at the same time. Questions answered along the way but left me wanting more.
