About this listen

From the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of Brother, I'm Dying, a collection of vividly imagined stories about community, family, and love.

Rich with hard-won wisdom and humanity, set in locales from Miami and Port-au-Prince to a small unnamed country in the Caribbean and beyond, Everything Inside is at once wide in scope and intimate, as it explores the forces that pull us together, or drive us apart, sometimes in the same searing instant.

In these eight powerful, emotionally absorbing stories, a romance unexpectedly sparks between two wounded friends; a marriage ends for what seem like noble reasons, but with irreparable consequences; a young woman holds on to an impossible dream even as she fights for her survival; two lovers reunite after unimaginable tragedy, both for their country and in their lives; a baby's christening brings three generations of a family to a precarious dance between old and new; a man falls to his death in slow motion, reliving the defining moments of the life he is about to lose.

This is the indelible work of a keen observer of the human heart - a master at her best.

Critic reviews

"Robin Miles's luminous narration will make converts of those who usually abstain from the short story genre.... Miles's delicate accents and flawless pronunciation of Haitian-Creole and French words adds authenticity. With Miles at the helm, listeners can easily imagine all the moments prior to and following the events she portrays, and that gift makes this a rare auditory experience." (AudioFile Magazine)

Edwidge is my favorite author since high school. And she’s done it again with this series of short stories capturing the dynamic lives of Haitian people. Each story was as moving as the next and always tackles a larger narrative that’s perfect for discussion in a group.

Edwidge does it again!

I expected more female empowered stories since it was a reese pick but this fell short for me.

Poignant, poetic and gut wrenching tales of the complexities of love and loss. Beautifully told.

I love this writer and have not been disappointed in her work since I first read her book Eyes, Breath, Memory. This book was no exception. I’m looking forward to reading more of her work. I have to admit that while I have a paper copy, listening to it on audiobooks made it even more enjoyable.

I love this writer

I feel like I only got partial stories untied together except from where they had come from. all were good stories I just expected them to be more tied together.

I guess I expect more from any book about Haitian culture so I may come off overly critical here.
I have been a huge fan of Edwidge Danticat since she wrote Krik! Krak! and absolutely loved The Farming of Bones. I enjoyed this book just not quite as much as I did those. To be fair, I believe it may be the narration. I can speak and understand the languages spoken in this book. I happen to love Robin Miles as a narrator EXCEPT when she is narrating Créole or French words. Some words she pronounces well, others she absolutely gets wrong. I really wish Audible would hire someone (like me) to help these narrators pronounce the words properly. It would make the listening experience a whole lot more enjoyable. Danticat and Miles are still excellent at what they do and I will definitely continue to listen and support them both.

I liked it but I wanted to like it more than I did.

This August pick by Reese Witherspoon won’t disappoint. These eight powerful stories take you on an emotional stroll through life that you may even be able to relate to.

Add it to your “must read” list as it won’t disappoint.

A wonderful book of short stories that I read on Reese Witherspoon's recommendation. This was her August 2020 book club pick.
