Publisher's summary

A brilliant engineer, Jilly Stiles has been educated since childhood to help run her father's dynasty. Now with the company safe after the marriages of her two sisters, Jilly can focus on her dream of building a mountaintop railroad—and never marry.

Nick Ryder came into Jilly's life when he saved her mother from her no-good stepfather, and he's prepared to protect Jilly from anything that threatens to harm her. Haunted by the pain of his own past, Nick is determined not to get his heart involved while protecting Jilly from losing her hard-won independence.

But when a cruel and powerful man goes to dangerous lengths to make Jilly his own, marrying Nick may be the only way to save herself and her dreams.

Much better narration

Liked all three books in the series but narration was pretty monotone or anxious until this book. Least favorite story of the trilogy but still good.

The storyline in this series keeps you wanting to hear the book

I love the action, and the romance that the author includes in the story. Foundation for the characters was present in the first two books, and carried on into the third. I really enjoyed the series.

Sorry to see the end of this trilogy

It was quite the adventure in this closing book of the Lumber Baron's Daughters. Jillian was the holdout who was never going to get married, until she was practically forced to marry a fine man.

Until a lecherous man was removed from the picture, she and her husband would never be safe, nor would her railroad from the mountain to Placerville be completed. Rioting workers, bomb blasts, bribery, kidnapping, poisonings, and murder were just a few of the obstacles the Stokes family faced in their way to freedom from those who desired to bring them down.

As always, Mary Connealy has written another series of page-turners. Her books never fail to keep the reader engaged from the first page to the last. (Or, in the case of Audible books, listening from the first word to the last. 😊)

Not my favorite Book Series by Mary Connelly

I have enjoyed a couple of other book series by Mary Connealy much more than this group of three books which concludes with “A Model of Devotion.” It was too unrealistic, predictable and simple. A couple of other book series that I have read by Mary Connealy had a light hearted humor throughout the storyline, so you don’t mind whenever the story was a bit unrealistic. They were fun and entertaining. There is one correction that I think that I should mention. I live in the surrounding area that the three books take place and I noticed that the narrator mispronounced the name of the town of Lodi whenever she read it. The i in Lodi should be pronounced as a strong capital I. I hope this explains it clearly enough. It was great hearing the town of Lodi mentioned along with several others in the area, such as Placerville, etc. It is beautiful country here with lots of interesting history. I do like Mary Connealy’s clean western stories and Christian messages. Her Christian message in A Model of Devotion was exceptional.
