Publisher's summary

Legacies were made to be rewritten.

Assassin Hawes Madigan wants to do right - by his family, his organization, his city, and the man he's falling for, ATF agent Christopher Perri. But Hawes's rules are being challenged by someone willing to kill for the old ways. To save his soul and his empire, Hawes must make an impossible decision: fight from the outside or bend the knee to win back his throne from within.

Chris is used to being the inside man, the one undercover. Now, he's on the outside marshaling forces in support of the man and the ring of assassins he was supposed to take down. His mission shifted when he found something that's been missing for 10 long years - a home, with Hawes.

As Hawes and Chris make a dangerous play for control, the lines between allies and traitors blur. Trusting the wrong person could destroy the legacy Hawes envisions for the Madigans. But not trusting anyone, or each other, could mean lights out on their love and lives forever.

Contains mature themes.

The queen must fall!

What a whirlwind of events that transpired in this ending of a trilogy! The angst is at an all-time high, with a few more surprises thrown our way.

When the true traitor was finally revealed, I was stunned by an “I knew it!” moment. Their family empire was meticulously crafted yet was beginning to shatter. Hawes was the only person willing to make the necessary changes, with the repercussions, for his family, while power and money continued to feed Rose. Even though she was the person who held the family together, her demise was bittersweet.

My complaint still stands with the narrator. There was ample opportunity for so many emotions to be expressed, yet Tristan minimally delivered them. I am pretty upset with this as a different choice would have nailed the emotions and personalities of the characters to life. Either way, I am excited to see what Layla does with Helena and Celia!

enjoyed it - solid 4 stars

<My review will be similar for the first three Fog City Books, because it really takes the 3 stories to complete the story arc.>

Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes

📖 Story comment: I'm so glad I waited until I had the entire series before starting, I'd have gone off the deep end waiting for book 3 😁.

I really enjoyed these books. I was completely absorbed with the characters, the action, the drama, the lies and deceit. Things are coming to a head and I was completely absorbed in the final outcome. This storyline has been really well written - I just wish it was longer with more personal time between Hawes and Chris and the guys and the families.

🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoyed Tristan James's narration and think he's done a great job narrating the Hawes and Dante books of this series. There are a variety of accents and character personalities and I enjoyed the performance.

Villains, Heroes, Conspiracies and HEA’s

Reviewing all of the first three books in the Fog City series. Layla Reyne created an entertaining world in a fictional San Francisco setting. A mafia-like family of assassins and tech geniuses attempts to change the family’s direction away from assassinations with gross human collateral damage. ATF undercover agents with personal revenge agendas are attempting to take down the family. Reyne weaves a good story with intricacies of human desire for power, wealth, revenge, and security for their own family. Interesting layers of intrigue spiced up with steamy sex in a nice mix. I enjoyed all three books and am pleased with the way Reyne tied loose ends together in A New Empire.
It’s fiction so liberties are taken to further the story. It’s not difficult to forgive some unrealistic behaviors because the overall story is good.

Decent story. Good narration.

The story entertained me. I had trouble believing that any law enforcement agency works that way. If you don't get hung up on details, the story does have some interesting twists and turns.
