About this listen

Co-author of the best-selling Mrs. Murphy novels, Rita Mae Brown launches a new series with this first mystery featuring Baxter the wirehaired dachshund.

When Baxter and his owner, Mags, leave New York for Nevada, they find themselves embroiled in a real head scratcher. First, the local water-pumping station is sabotaged. Then, a murdered man’s bones - dating back to the 1800s - are unearthed in a barn owned by Mags’ great-aunt. As Mags attempts to put the pieces together, Baxter readies himself to protect her at all costs.

good story. well read

Rita Mae Brown always has interesting characters both human and four-legged which I enjoy a great deal. I also enjoy her inside into ecology environment water rights and all of the things that so many people overlook. as someone who has always felt deeply connected with nature and with animals I appreciate that in her books. the fact that she adds a perfectly good mystery into it is a absolute bonus

A Nose For Justice: A Novel

Johanna Parker did a great job narrating this book. This is a change for Rita Mae Brown and I hope maybe a new series. I read Brown for her interesting animals trying to led the humans to the answer of a murder and her intertwining history into the story. Over the years she seems to get on a soap box over political issues. The political message in this book is an important one of water usage and conservation. Her other books take place in Virginia but this one takes place in northern Nevada, an area I know the history and geology. So I did catch an error in geography. This story is short and makes a nice break between longer and more intense stories.

Not what I expected from Mrs. Murphy's author

Too many facts. Too little mystery and dog chatter. It turned into a boring read and I was really looking forward to meeting a new animal detective.

Wavering

Overall I found that there was just too much detail given about Nevada and water rights and that the main character was a little washed out. I would also like to see the dogs have a bigger role.

However it was still a unique and well-written book and I look forward to the next.

loved those dogs!

As the owner/rescuer of many dogs and cats over the years, I have often considered what my critters might be thinking or saying. Usually I think they might be laughing at me. I totally enjoyed this book as it was much lighter than my usual reading.
