About this listen

Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell.

Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another.... One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.

With the police left scratching their heads, Lady Hardcastle calls upon her amateur sleuthing skills to launch an investigation, with Flo’s able assistance. Surrounded by suspects both human and supernatural, Lady Hardcastle must use a little trickery of her own to unmask the murderer.

I love this whole series!

These books are just so much fun. Light & intelligent banter and fun, winding plots. I hope there are many more to come of Lady Hardcastle and her “tiny servant.”

Grate narration. so-so story.

So basically, my review is split. book wize- this was o.k, but my least favorite from the 4 books in the series. It is always a pleasure to revisit the relationship between the two main heroines and learn more about their history and adventures. However the murder/s plot had such a promise and just went down hill and evanutally did not pay off. The narration how ever was awesome. I want her to do the narration to all my books. she brings everything to life. the storey, the distinct Characters. she is able to give every character it own unick personalty traits using her voice. she is the perfect narrator.

So, so, so enjoyable!

A tremendous find! This series is light, has engaging characters, and YET is very mentally satisfying.
It is a period piece charming ‘cozy mystery’ but isn’t too fluffy. It has well done plot but is not gritty.
And it is PG, I can listen with my kids (if they choose).
The narrator could not be more perfect. I really enjoyed this series.

This series continues to improve

This Lady Hardcastle series is lovely, fun and surprising. The author incorporates interesting little tidbits
about the time period (this one uses the new discovered 'motion picture' trend that engaged the folks of that time).
These are lovely distractions from the woes of life.

Best of the Series so Far

I am thrilled with this series and the fourth installment is my favorite so far. The dialog is always so fun, the plots excellently woven and the narrator impeccable. I Ioved this story and we also got more background on Armstrong and Lady Hardcastle.

Backstory finally!

YEY! Finally we learn how Flo and Emily came together (no spoilers in this review) but it was nice to get the backstory. A typical cozy with the trademarked british snark is my cup of tea. We got to hear from the ladies that work in Lady Hardcastle's house and really get a sense of who they are.

Elizabeth Knowelden is, by far, one of the best narrators I've come across. This is a perfect marriage of story and narrator and I can't imagine anyone else speaking for these characters. (Sort of how I feel for Sister and Mouse in the Southern Sisters mysteries.)

If you like the series, this is a great addition. Highly recommended!
