About this listen

It is 1864 and Eliza Spooner's husband, Will, has joined the Kansas volunteers to fight the Confederates, leaving her with their two children and in charge of their home and land. Eliza is confident that he will return home, and she helps pass the months making a special quilt to keep Will warm during his winter months in the army. When the unthinkable happens, she takes in a woman and child who have been left alone and made vulnerable by the war, and she finds solace and camaraderie amongst the women of her quilting group. And when she is asked to help hide an escaped slave, she must decide for herself what is right, and who can she can count on to help her.

What can I say?

I have read 2 other novels by Ms Dallas. Why it took me so long to gather up her other stories I have no excuse for. I have missed out, to be certain. Ms Dallas writes with such a vividness I am there...I am standing near the barn as they ride up into the yard. I am there in the house as the men search it. I am stitching along with the ladies on the porch. From the very first page, the very first sentences, I am in Kansas, I am sharing in the lives of new found friends.
Being a book lover, I tend to dissolve myself into the fabric of the stories I read, become a part of their weaving as I read. It's just my nature to do so. Some stories, however, it takes time to develop that fabric, to see the weaving lay out. Not the case with this story...nor the others I have read so far...by Ms Dallas. I cannot wait to get to the next story she shares.

A Tale About Strength Forgiveness and Moving On

The story was placed in the historical context of the Civil War and the immediate period following the Civil War. The story does not focus on invidual war battles, but on the battles going on at home as women try to fight for their farms, their children, and their own happiness.

Women in Civil War Kansas

For me, this is one of Sandra Dallas' best books. The interaction between those in need, forgiveness between enemies, and the companionship between women in war times was especially well done.

During the last year of the USA Civil War, Eliza Spooner and her two children are waiting out the war times missing their husband and father. Will is a loving and compassionate man who has joined the Union Army. At home, Eliza takes in a war widow and her baby daughter, a run away slave woman, and a soldier at the end of the war. Letters from Will help keep his family going.

Excellent combined story lines and characterizations. Dallas handles many of the consequences of war times in 1864 very realistically. I've read many books in this time period and this is one of my very favorite!! I listened to this on Audible and enjoyed it very much.

One of My Favorites

I've never read Sandra Dallas' writing before now. This book is well written, has a good plot and the characters are memorable. Also, the narrator is one I will look for again. She has a beautiful voice and was a perfect choice for this book.
Not only will I look for more of Ms. Dallas' books, but I am certain A Quilt for Christmas is one I will return to again and again.

Loved This!

What a sweet story of Love, loss, forgiveness and so much more! While Christmas wasn't the main theme, I'm glad I listened to it.
