Story
Elizabeth Bennet has just experienced one of the most difficult years of her entire life. The loss of a beloved sister, a failed harvest, and the threat of freezing to death from a bitterly cold winter cause the inhabitants of Longbourn to do the unthinkable. Meanwhile, Fitzwilliam Darcy is desperate to keep his family and his tenants alive. The scarcity of food due to a freezing summer has him taking extreme measures. His radical idea takes him, along with his friend Charles Bingley, to Netherfield, where his drastic experiment has the potential to save them all - or ruin his life forever.

Fitzwilliam Darcy has had enough—enough of the ton and their speculations, enough of matchmaking mamas and their eager daughters, and enough of his family’s expectations that he will eventually marry his cousin Anne. Story
“Mr Darcy, I am eager to hear your explanation for the fact that quite a few people believe we are engaged.” It starts with a bit of well-meant advice. Colonel Fitzwilliam suggests to his cousin Darcy that, before he proposes to Elizabeth Bennet in Kent, perhaps he ought to discuss his plans with their families first. What neither man could have predicted however was that Lord Matlock would write the news to his sister, or that Viscount Saye would overhear and tell his friends, or that his friends might slip a little and let their friends know as well.

Story
One of the turning points in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is Miss Elizabeth Bennet's passionate refusal and denunciation of the equally passionate but infinitely more repressed Fitzwilliam Darcy. However, unforeseen events can lead to the most unexpected consequences. During a visit with her friend, Charlotte Collins, at Hunsford, Elizabeth falls prey to illness for almost the first time in her life just as Mr. Darcy comes to call. Befuddled by her illness, she misinterprets his proposal of marriage, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is mistaken for acceptance.

Is not the very meaning of love that it surpasses every objection against it? Jilted. Never did Mr. Darcy imagine it could happen to him. But it has, and by Elizabeth Bennet, the woman who first hated and rejected him but then came to love him - he believed - and agree to be his wife. Alas, it is a short-lived, ill-fated romance that ends nearly as soon as it has begun. No reason is given. More than a year since he last saw her - a year of anger, confusion, and despair - he receives an invitation from the Bingleys to a house party at Netherfield.

“Love at first sight” is a laughable concept in the considered opinion of Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam and never occurs in real life—certainly not in the life of an experienced soldier. In fact, until he observes the smitten nature of his cousin Fitzwilliam Darcy, he doubts that fervent love exists. Marriage, after all, is a matter of money, social standing, and property.

I loved this novel when I read it in the spring, and I enjoyed it very much in audiobook. Stevie Zimmerman is a talented voice actress that pairs well with the rhythm of Joana Starnes’s brilliant prose. Not to be missed if you are looking for your next Darcy and Elizabeth fix!

Lack luster
This variation lacks the transformative events that mark most p&p stories. Darcy does not rescue Lydia or Elizabeth. There is no cat fight with Elizabeth and Lady Catherine. Elizabeth does not even put Caroline in her place. The characters develop through these scenes. They discover their own pride, prejudice and backbone. In essence, all the best elements are missing.

Enjoyed the twists on this variation
This is my second P&P variation by Ms. Starnes. I really enjoyed the believable variation on the “minor” characters and feel this really added to the storyline.
Hint, things are not always as they appear….
The conversations between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy make it feel as though the reader been given a glimpse into their lives and time period. I enjoyed watching as their relationship grew.
I’ve purchased every variation…. I am addicted. I’m going to have to listen to a true crime story next, because I am finding myself thinking in Ms Bennett’s time period, and I can hear the words and voice of Lady Catherine, who by the way is an absolute joy to see “bested”.
