Publisher's summary

A Zoo in My Luggage is the colorful, first-hand account of Gerald Durrell's six-month animal-collecting trip in British Cameroon, and his attempts to create his own zoo. Motivated by a passion for wildlife, and a desire to save endangered species from extinction, Durrell assembles a glorious panoply of exotic animals - including a female baboon called Georgina, who later runs amok in a department store; a black-eared squirrel, who tries to bury nuts in his ear; and a gentlemanly chimpanzee named Chumly, who greets him with an outstretched hand. Aided by the Fon of Bafut, who houses the collection (and hosts many long and lively parties), Durrell amasses more than 250 animals. He struggles to find a home for the animals back in England, until a stroke of luck leads him to Jersey, and the eventual founding of Durrell Wildlife Park (now Jersey Zoo).

A favourite book at its best

I grew up on this book, the first of Durrell's I ever read. Fascinating, funny, informative, and well-crafted, the author takes us through the disorganised process of an animal collector creating a zoo of his own. This reading by Degas outdoes my father's voice, reading the book to the family in the '60s. Don't miss it.

A phenomenon

Gerald Durrell’s books are a phenomenon that has been giving pure pleasure to people for more than half a century.
I grew up on them — my whole family grew up on them.
Here, in the Czech Republic, they are very popular, and we can enjoy them in excellent, loving “old-school” translations and in the original.
And these years, I can even listen to them unabridged!
Too wonderful.
Get all the Durrell books and treasure them for generations!

Entertainment and Enlightenment Combined

I began with "My Family and other Animals" then "Beasts in my Belfry" and finished with "A Zoo in my Luggage". (I recommend listening to them in that order.) At a very early age, Durrell knew his life's mission was to study, befriend and protect animal species of all kinds. What he accomplished in his life with marvelous wit and sheer willpower garnered my undying respect. This book describes his efforts to create his own zoo, which he finally does on in Jersey in the Channel Islands. If you love animals and love to laugh, you MUST listen to these books!

Delightful reading of a delightful story

Having seen The Durrells in Cofu, I wanted more about their lives. This story, written by the youngest son as a married adult still full of his love for all creatures, was just the thing! I highly recommend it.

A Kind and Funny Read

Who couldn’t love Edward Durrel? He is a wonderful story-teller and writer, humorous and laugh-out loud funny, as he tells of collecting animals to start his own zoo. No wonder that the little boy from Corfu grew up to start a zoo and do much for animals.
