Critic reviews

“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

Extraordinary Life

Incredible, true story.

Exceptional writing.

Excellent narration.

I don’t understand why Audible requires more words.

The detail of his experiences

I Really enjoyed listening to the history of this author’s experiences overseas. It was a fairly quick story with great detail.

A wonderful Classic

My children and I listen to this book at least once per year. It is an intriguing, witty, and engaging story of part of Dahl’s life. We love it.

Delightful

Such a delightfully told tale. It amuses from the very beginning of his journey to Africa to the end of his flying with the RAF. A very enjoyable read.

What a ride!

Some people live interesting lives. Some people are born storytellers who can make any event sound riveting. Roald Dahl is both. These stories of his WW II adventures are gripping, emotional, and over far too soon. Dan Stevens' narration further brings them to life so well that I often forgot that I wasn't actually listening to the author's own voice.

One of my favorites

Amazing and often hilarious true life story of Roald Dahl in Africa when WW2 breaks out and he ends up becoming a fighter pilot with little to no training.

Breathtakingly beautiful book, superbly narrated by Dan Stevens

Eight years ago I spent fourteen days in Italy, and realized I actually needed to spend at least two years there, looking, listening, eating and drinking. Hearing this book felt like four hours and forty minutes of that gorgeous experience. Dahl’s simple yet dazzling prose is perfectly rendered by one of the best narrator-performers I’ve encountered, and I’ve listened to hundreds of books. Dan Stevens delights and amazes whether experienced visually, audibly, or both.
