About this listen

Explore the captivating life of Aaron Burr and his duel with Alexander Hamilton.

Based on his early achievements, Aaron Burr, Jr., should have become an obscure but respected figure in American history. An officer in the Continental Army, a high-flying lawyer, and an influential politician, his career peak was becoming the third vice president in US history.

But after all these achievements, Burr's name is now associated with corruption and cruelty. He killed a man in an illegal duel while in office, and interest in that man, Alexander Hamilton, has revived Burr's reputation as one of history's villains. It was a reputation earned not just through the duel, in which he killed one of the brightest lights in the political firmament, but through a treasonous conspiracy after leaving the vice presidency.

Who was Aaron Burr? What drove him to such achievements and such failures? And how did a respected politician become a publicly reviled villain? Pick up this audiobook now to find out.

  • A young man

I have no remarkable insights about Aaron Burr, but the protagonist in our history class. Yes, I used to hate him as I remember the duel taught by our history teacher back then. This summary guide has helped me understand his actions although I can’t say if I already like him. Well done, publisher! For coming up with an excellent piece.

Burr may be the key to understanding that whole period. Also had some very interesting insights on the role of land speculators - they were as sleazy as their current descendants (real estate speculators)

After hearing the detailed political rivalry between Burr and Hamilton, I came to the conclusion that this man is more than a villain. He is worth the study and this book provided enlightenment to many aspects.

The Author has done a good job dredging up correspondence, memoirs and official documents relevant to the life of Burr. Nonetheless, at the end of the book, Burr continues to be a somewhat shadowy and controversial figure.

This book reflects serious scholarship and a more realistic characterization of the behavior, partisanship, and viciousness of the American republic's first three decades, in which Burr played a crucial role.

facts, political explanations about the founders' differences and motives, and a list of characters broad enough to capture even the most mundane participants in America's earliest days. But authors wove all that together into an exciting tale told by the perfect narrator and ending with the perfect conclusion.

Burr was known in history for his duel with Alexander Hamilton but there was so much more to him. There were a couple of typos but the overall content is well done with good reference.

He could be egocentric, obstinate and overly ambitious. But what ultimately this thoughtful biography proves is the maxim so well presented in the final scene of the now classic .when the Senator states, "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".

the essence of whom may never be known.

The reader is presented with pieces of the complex mosaic that was Aaron Burr, but they don't necessarily fit together.OVERALL great book.
