About this listen
Abdel Karim AlKhattabi, also spelled Abdelkarim el-Khattabi, was a prominent Moroccan nationalist and leader of the Moroccan independence movement during the mid 20th century. He was born on February 6, 1882, in the village of Ajdir, located in the Rif region of Morocco.
AlKhattabi played a crucial role in organizing and leading the armed resistance against French and Spanish colonial rule in Morocco. He became a symbol of resistance and a champion of Moroccan independence. AlKhattabi led the Rif Republic, an independent state established in the Rif region from 1921 to 1926.
He was known for his strategic military tactics and the ability to mobilize local tribes in the resistance against the colonial powers. AlKhattabi's leadership inspired many Moroccans in their fight for freedom and self-determination.
After the Rif Republic fell in 1926, AlKhattabi continued his struggle for Moroccan independence through political means. He co-founded the Istiqlal Party (Independence Party) in 1943, which became the largest nationalist party in Morocco.
AbdelKarim AlKhattabi's efforts and those of other Moroccan nationalists eventually led to Morocco gaining independence from France and Spain in 1956. However, by this point his health had declined and he did not outlive his achievement, passing away on March 6, 1963, in Cairo, Egypt.
AbdelKarim AlKhattabi's contributions to the independence movement and his role as a nationalist leader have left a lasting impact on Moroccan history and continue to be remembered and celebrated in the country.
AbdelKarim AlKhattabi, through his leadership and dedication to the cause of Moroccan independence, inspired and continues to inspire many people. Here are a few ways in which he has served as an inspiration:
- Nationalist movement: AlKhattabi's unwavering commitment to Moroccan independence inspired countless individuals to join the nationalist movement. His ability to mobilize and unite people from different backgrounds and tribes showcased the power of a common cause and ignited a sense of national pride.
- Resistance against colonialism: AlKhattabi's successful resistance against French and Spanish colonial rule in Morocco demonstrated that a determined and organized movement could challenge and confront powerful colonial powers. His strategic military tactics and resilience in the face of adversity served as an inspiration for other anti-colonial movements around the world.
- Symbol of freedom and independence: AlKhattabi became a symbol of freedom and independence for Moroccans. His leadership in establishing the Rif Republic and his continued efforts to achieve self-determination resonated with people who aspired to break free from colonial oppression. He instilled hope and a sense of national identity in those who sought a sovereign Morocco.
- Legacy in Moroccan history: AbdelKarim AlKhattabi's legacy lives on in Moroccan history and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence. His courage, determination, and vision continue to inspire individuals who aspire to bring about positive change in their societies.
- Influence on Moroccan national identity: AlKhattabi's influence is deeply embedded in Moroccan national identity. His contributions to the independence movement have shaped the country's history, politics, and culture. He is celebrated as a national hero and serves as a role model for future generations.
AbdelKarim AlKhattabi's impact goes beyond his time and continues to inspire people who strive for freedom, independence, and social justice.

Story
China and Japan have cultural and political connections that stretch back 1,500 years. But today, their relationship is strained. China's military buildup deeply worries Japan, while Japan's brutal occupation of China in World War II remains an open wound. In recent years, less than 10 percent of each population had positive feelings toward the other, and both countries insist that the other side must deal openly with its history before relations can improve. Ezra Vogel's China and Japan examines key turning points in Sino-Japanese history.

In this definitive history of the modern Arab world, award-winning historian Eugene Rogan draws extensively on Arab sources and texts to place the Arab experience in its crucial historical context for the first time. Tracing five centuries of Arab history, Rogan reveals that there was an age when the Arabs set the rules for the rest of the world. Today, however, the Arab world's sense of subjection to external powers carries vast consequences for both the region and Westerners who attempt to control it.

Story
The end of the Cold War promised a new era of international peace. But instead, violence has proliferated across the globe, not in the form of a superpower arms race or a clash of armies, but in bitter local conflicts marked by terrorism, insurgency, and guerrilla warfare. Former Central Intelligence Agency director James Woolsey likened the post-Cold-War world to "a jungle full of snakes". The emergence of this new, potentially never-ending struggle has forced our military to reevaluate strategies or risk losing hearts, minds, and soldiers the world over.

In Vietnam, Christopher Goscha tells the full history of Vietnam, from antiquity to the present day. Generations of emperors, rebels, priests, and colonizers left complicated legacies in this remarkable country. Periods of Chinese, French, and Japanese rule reshaped and modernized Vietnam, but so too did the colonial enterprises of the Vietnamese themselves as they extended their influence southward from the Red River Delta.

The narrative of the Korean War in the West, and particularly in the United States, tells the tale of a conflict between two global superpowers and competing ideologies in a far-flung corner of the globe. The reality is that the wheels of motion that drove the country to war in 1950 began turning long before American boots set foot on Korean soil. The heart of the conflict was a civil war between a population arbitrarily divided by colonization and the global geopolitics at the end of the Second World War.

The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

In The Vanquished, a highly original and gripping work of history, Robert Gerwarth asks us to think again about the true legacy of the First World War. In large part it was not the fighting on the Western Front that proved so ruinous to Europe's future but the devastating aftermath, as countries on both sides of the original conflict were savaged by revolutions, pogroms, mass expulsions, and further major military clashes.

Story
Groundbreaking in its inclusiveness, enthralling in its narrative of a movement whose purpose, in the words of Leon Trotsky, was "to overthrow the world", The Russian Revolution draws conclusions that aroused great controversy. Richard Pipes argues convincingly that the Russian Revolution was an intellectual, rather than a class, uprising; that it was steeped in terror from its very outset; and that it was not a revolution at all but a coup d'etat - "the capture of governmental power by a small minority."

According to US Secretary of War Henry Stimson, the "most shocking single event" of World War II was not the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but rather the fall of France in spring 1940. Michael Neiberg offers a dramatic history of the American response - a policy marked by panic and moral ineptitude, which placed the United States in league with fascism and nearly ruined the alliance with Britain.

October 1917, heralded as the culmination of the Russian Revolution, remains a defining moment in world history. Even a hundred years after the events that led to the emergence of the world's first self-proclaimed socialist state, debate continues over whether, as historian E. H. Carr put it decades ago, these earth-shaking days were a "landmark in the emancipation of mankind from past oppression" or "a crime and a disaster."
